Pathfinder 2e Video Game Announced by Ossian Studios

Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand

Following the release of Path of the Righteous in September of 2021, Pathfinder fans have been wondering when they would finally get a video game that uses the Pathfinder 2e rules. The good folks over at Ossian Studios have given us that answer, and while it might not be as soon as we’d like, it’s definitely coming.

Ossian Studios

For those who remember the Neverwinter Nights games, Ossian Studios might be a familiar name. This is because they developed multiple large-scale modules using the Neverwinter Nights engine. If that activates a bit of nostalgia for you, then you know that these are the perfect people to be handling a Pathfinder 2e game.

Ossian might have some veteran developers, but it’s still a small studio. They don’t have the capabilities of Larian Studios, so fans hoping for Pathfinder’s equivalent of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be disappointed. However, the CEO of Ossian, Alan Miranda, worked on both of the original Baldur’s Gate titles during his tenure at BioWare.

The Pathfinder CRPG, which was just announced, will be based on a module of the same name from Pathfinder 1e’s lifetime. It has been stated to go up to 8th level, which is about the same as the original module.

From the announcement, we know that The Dragon’s Demand will look and play something like a fully 3D virtual tabletop. This will almost certainly put some players off, but most Pathfinder fans will probably be thrilled to have their game portrayed in 3D, rather than as tokens on a grid. Whether these virtual miniatures will be static or have some level of animation remains to be seen, but there are some fun spell effects in the trailer.

Features

According to the announcement on the Ossian website, The Dragon’s Demand will feature seven ancestries, sixteen classes, and over thirty backgrounds. This means that all the classes from Pathfinder’s Player Core 1 and 2 will be available to choose from, but it’s unclear why the choice of ancestries is so limited. If they choose to include the versatile heritages from Player Core 1, however, that will somewhat mitigate the lack of ancestry choices.

One graphical feature that players can get excited about is that Ossian is promising that equipment will be reflected on the in-game miniatures. While this can be a bit of a double-edged sword, many people enjoy it when their character’s appearance is updated when their gear changes. This also goes to show how much work Ossian is actually putting into this title.

Questions

Perhaps the biggest question that players will want to know the answer to is if The Dragon’s Demand will be using the Pathfinder 2e Remaster rules. Unfortunately, none of the information we have so far answers this question, but we will definitely be able to find out more when the Kickstarter launches.

The other big question that will doubtlessly be on the minds of fans is regarding mod support. One of the biggest draws of Neverwinter Nights was the comprehensive modding toolkit, so players could play DM by creating their own adventures. Hopefully, Ossian will consider that and include robust modding support.

The Future

With the Kickstarter just around the corner, Pathfinder fans won’t have to wait long for more information. It’s reasonable to expect some stretch goals as part of the project, which could include anything from mod support, additional ancestries, animated miniatures, or expansions that will increase the supported level cap. Look forward to finding out more when the project launches on September 24th.
