Gamescom 2024 previews a lot of game trailers and gameplay for some highly anticipated games. Phantom Blade Zero is another game the players get to look at. It is a brand-new Action RPG that features a deep and dark art style, fast-paced combat, and a fictional world blending Chinese martial arts. This game is being developed and published by S Games and is coming to both PlayStation 5 and PC. This article will go over everything that was shown at Gamescom regarding this game.
Combat
The combat of Phantom Blade Zero is based on Chinese Martial Arts and motion capture of actual Kung Fu masters was used in the game. The combat of the game is similar to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice but has equal importance on both offense through attacking and defense through parrying and dodging. The combat is flashy with all the offensive options and moves but also has an equal importance on deflecting enemy attacks.
The combat of the game is focused on breaking the posture or stance of the enemy to deal critical damage. This is similar to Sekiro and stance is broken down by attacking enemy combatants as well as deflecting their attacks. Not everything can be parried in this game, however, as some attacks need to be dodged. The combat is extremely fast and fluid and some of the moves are a sight to behold.
Difficulty & Level Design
Phantom Blade Zero is not Soulslike and is much more accessible to the average player. The game currently has two difficulty options as of right now, normal and hard. The level design of the game also offers a lot more freedom to the player. Players can just rush into the arena and take every enemy head-on. Players can use the environment to their advantage to stealth assassinate enemies, as well as use their bow for taking down enemies at range.
Equipment & Weapons
Phantom Blade Zero is much more of an Action game and leans toward that. There is not much loot in the game but there are different weapon types that players can acquire and so far we have seen a Greatsword, Longsword, and Dual Daggers. The game also allows players to equip two weapons at a time. Weapon swapping will play a major role in this game and players are rewarded for that.
Weapon swapping while in combat prevents Stamina from deteriorating which is helpful to the gameplay loop. Stamina recovery is an essential gameplay component in Phantom Blade Zero. Weapon swapping not only makes the combat feel much more fluid and impressive but also helps in Stamina management.
