Nintendo Tracks Super Mario Friendships And The Results are Surprising
The world of Super Mario seems to be a friendly place. It’s bright and colorful, and aside from the regular attacks from Bowser, everyone seems to get along. Even Bowser will join the gang to play tennis, golf, and compete in kart races. However, now Nintendo has officially charted various characters’ friendships, and the results might surprise you.
Super Mario Friendships on Play Nintendo

Play Nintendo, Nintendo’s official site for kids, has posted a chart of friendships for various Mario characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser. Some of the results are easy to figure out, such as how Mario is best friends with his brother Luigi, but others are surprising, such as how Bowser is listed under Mario’s friends. So are Goombas and Koopa Troopas, enemies that Mario regularly stomps on. This could feed the fan theory that Mario characters are actors and the mainline games are the stories they act out, while the spinoffs are where they chill out with golf and kart racing.
More Friendship Surprises
Pauline, the original damsel Mario saved in Donkey Kong, is noticeably absent from Mario’s list of friends. Mario and Luigi are also apparently friends with the baby versions of themselves. Don’t ask me how that works, but given that there’s apparently some time travel involved for the babies to race with the adults in Mario Kart, who knows what kinds of supernatural powers are in use? Luigi is also listed under Boos’ friends, even though he regularly sucks them up in the Poltergust 3000.
Should We Take This Seriously?
Should we take friendships that are listed on a children’s site seriously? On the one hand, it’s a children’s site, but on the other hand, it’s also officially licensed by Nintendo, so who knows how canon it is? Even though the site says “Bowser isn’t exactly a ‘friend,’ but where would Mario be without a troublesome giant Koopa who keeps snatching Princess Peach?” it still lists Bowser as being friends with almost everyone in the Super Mario series.
Are the Mario Characters Actors?
There’s been a theory lingering that the characters are actors who act out stories for the mainline games and chill out together for the spinoff games. If Mario and Bowser really are buddies, perhaps they get together on Sundays after a long week of filming and relax with a game of tennis or golf. It wouldn’t be the weirdest thing to happen in the Mario universe.
