Hollow Knight: Silksong getting an free Expansion in 2026

Hollow Knight Silksong is Getting a Free Expansion in 2026!

Hollow Knight: Silksong has been one of the hottest games of the year. The long-anticipated sequel to the beloved Hollow Knight is fresh off its Game of the Year nomination, though some people have criticized its unfair difficulty. Now, the game is getting a free expansion to excite the fans.

The Hollow Knight: Silksong Expansion

In a blog post by Team Cherry, the developers of both the original Hollow Knight and Silksong, the developers thanked the players for how they “braved Silksong’s distant and dangerous lands. That’s over seven million of you who’ve purchased the game, alongside millions more playing on Xbox Game Pass!”

Then they unveiled a teaser for the upcoming expansion, titled Sea of Sorrow. The teaser shows little more than snow flying everywhere and a device getting struck by lightning, but the blog post states that the expansion will include “new areas, bosses, tools, and more! Hornet’s adventures continue in our nautically themed expansion, coming free for all players next year.” Other details are being kept under wraps.

In addition, the post announced that there will be a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the original Hollow Knight. Team Cherry stated that it “incorporates all the updates and enhancements that Silksong received on the platform: High frame-rate modes, higher resolutions, and many additional graphical effects.”

The Switch 2 edition will be free to all players, and it will include several bug fixes and patches. On Steam and GOG, players can test out some of the updates right now on public-beta branches. The update will have its official release sometime in 2026, giving players time to test out the improvements. Here are the improvements and fixes listed on Steam:

“Patch Notes:

– Added support for 21:9 & 16:10 resolutions.

– Game now pauses while in inventory menus.

– Upgraded to Unity Input System for broader controller support (original input system is still available, if preferred, via Options>Controller>Advanced Settings)

– Added dithering effect, and dithering options, to reduce colour banding.

– Fixed a softlock in City of Tears Grub room.

– Reduced Grey Prince Zote’s stagger bounce height.

– Updated Sly’s Great Slash collider to closer match visual.

– Salubra’s Blessing now deactivates after reaching max Soul.

– Map panning is now smoother

– Various smaller fixes and tweaks.

We are aware of an issue where cutscenes are not playing on Mac, and are working on a fix for this.

Additionally, there is an issue with cutscenes showing a “test pattern” when playing on Steam Deck, which is due to the system defaulting to an incompatible proton version. We are working on a fix for this, but for now it can be worked around by selecting a “Linux Runtime” version in the compatibility settings, which forces the system to use the Linux-native version of the game.”

How About A Release Date?

Unfortunately, neither the Silksong expansion and the Nintendo Switch 2 Hollow Knight update have concrete release dates. The blog post only says that they will both be coming out in 2026. As such, you likely have plenty of time to immerse yourself in both games in anticipation for the new updates. If you haven’t experienced them, you might want to treat yourself for the holidays.
