Sonic the Hedgehog Fans Uncover Interesting Never-Before-Seen Teaser

Sonic the Hedgehog fans have discovered an interesting piece of Sonic history. A lost teaser for a cancelled game has been found and has now surfaced online. The footage was apparently meant to be in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II as a way to tease the next game, which was cancelled.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 was released in 2010. The planned Sonic the Hedgehog 4 trilogy was meant as a sequel trilogy to the original Sonic games on the Sega Genesis. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II was released in 2012, but the planned third game was cancelled before release. Both Episode 1 and Episode II were side-scrolling platformers meant to capture the look and feel of the classic Sonic games, and the cancelled Episode III would have presumably continued that tradition.

The Lost Teaser

The recently discovered deleted scene was apparently found on a Macintosh computer that used to belong to Sega itself. It was apparently planned to be included in Episode II as a post-credit scene that teased the sequel. The scene shows a brief glimpse of Knuckles staring at the Master Emerald, followed by the Master Emerald repowering Dr. Robotnik’s spaceship, the Death Egg. The Death Egg spits out several space probes before the words “TO BE CONTINUED” flash on the screen.

Had the scene been included in the final game, fans would have undoubtedly been disappointed that the story was never completed. One has to wonder if Sega was already thinking that the third game might not be released. After Episode I received lukewarm reception, Sega might have been prepared for Episode II to be received similarly, and that might have been why they opted not to include the teaser.

Lost Media in Games

Early builds and prototypes of games often become lost, since they were never meant to be seen by the public. As such, finds like this deleted scene are to be cherished. Every time lost media is found, a piece of our collective history becomes richer. While we may never know what Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode III would have been like, this teaser gives us an interesting glimpse of what might have been.
