Pomu Rainpuff’s ‘Tomodachi Life’ Series from 2022-2023 is Iconic

While I don’t personally play many games, Tomodachi Life was the perfect chill game to relax and watch Pomu Rainpuff interact with the characters she made from Nijisanji EN. It was reminiscent of older Wii games using Miis from 2006.

I casually watch Vtubers and most of the timeif it’s a karaoke or a drawing stream or watch-along, for example. Just chatting streams and collaborations are very popular in the Vtubing and streaming space.

There are games like Animal Crossing or Miitopia on the Nintendo Switch, but Tomodachi Life from 2013 felt more sentimental than that.

Tomodachi Life: Pomu Rainpuff’s Series was My Personal Favorite

Pomu Rainpuff is a former Nijisanji English Vtuber from first-wave Lazulight. If you don’t know about Vtubers, I wrote about them, some background on streaming, and the process of becoming one.

Pomu Rainpuff was known for playing many games and had long-running series like Tomodachi Life. I watched Nijisanji EN’s Super Sunny Fairy virtual liver from time to time. Despite graduatinga term for when a Vtuber leaves an agency or leaves her online personaPomu left videos up for viewers to still watch.

Games like the Metal Gear series, Minecraft, Ace Combat, Death Stranding, Doom, and Outer Wilds were popular game streams of hers. Pomu also played various Pokemon games, including challenges like a Nuzlocke. She also played many horror games like Phasmophobia and David Cage games like Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain.

Among the many types of streams she did, Pomu’s Tomodachi Life became my personal favorite. It was a ten-stream series that totaled 35 hours between 2022 and 2023.

But what is this Nintendo 3DS game and will it get a new game for the Switch?

Tomodachi Life: Will Nintendo Bring its Potential Sequel to Switch?

Tomodachi Life is a life simulation video game, first developed for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. It was the sequel to the Japan-exclusive game from 2009 titled Tomodachi Collection.

Tomodachi Life follows the life of “islander” Mii characters you make and see their interactions with each other on a day-to-day basis. It involves relationships, problem-solving, and dialogue between the characters. It had a mixed response; this concept followed up with the Switch’s Miitopia from 2016 but had different elements other than the Miis.

In Japan last year, it got a new trademark, so Nintendo could be getting a new sequel or Switch port for Tomodachi Life. The social sim has a good dedicated following, so fans are hopeful a new game… or at least the older may be coming soon to the new console.

Tomodachi Life: Past Controversy and Updates to the Game

When Nintendo’s Tomodachi Life came overseas, it did have some controversy as an English sequel to its Japanese-only game. Back in 2014, the game developers faced criticism over the lack of gay characters and not adjusting to the times. This is due to the game being about relationships, but not allowing same-sex relationships. A fan at the time organized a social media campaign against the game for equality, but Nintendo stated its creative avenue wasn’t meant to offend others on the topic of relationships.

“Nintendo never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life,” Nintendo of America Inc. claimed in a statement. “The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all our fans will see that Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary.”

The fan hopes Nintendo incorporated same-sex relationships for its future update or new game, rather than going the boycott route. According to the Associated Press, Nintendo unintentionally brought politics into a game when was first introduced to the United States and Europe.

“We have heard and thoughtfully considered all the responses,” Nintendo commented on the hashtag campaign. “We will continue to listen and think about the feedback. We’re using this as an opportunity to better understand our consumers and their expectations of us at all levels of the organization. We have been looking to broaden our approach to development whenever possible as we put all our energy into continuing to develop fun games that will surprise and delight players.”
