Ever since Bethesda Softworks dropped their first teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6, fans have been endlessly speculating what to expect from its story and gameplay. One question that has stood over others is exactly where this latest entry would occur. Six years later, the setting remains a mystery.
The Elder Scrolls franchise prides itself on being an open-world series. Every game has provided a massive map filled with adventures and deep lore to explore. Because of this, many possibilities exist for the saga’s next chapter. Here is a breakdown of the biggest contenders for the setting of Elder Scrolls 6.
The Summerset Isles
The biggest contender for the main setting of Elder Scrolls 6 would be the Summerset Isles, the native land of the High Elves. Of the many Elven variants that populate Tamriel, the High Elves are the most traditional. Furthermore, the Elven people have always had a mysterious past. As shown by their cousins, the Dark Elves, in Morrowind, their arc has many threads to explore. From what Bethesda revealed with Online, the Isles themselves are a beautiful archipelago to explore.
This setting would also provide interesting conflict. During Skyrim, the Elf-supremacist Thalmor establishes itself as a powerful faction with a hand in several plotlines. Given their nature, they also prove to be some of the most despised characters in the franchise. Because of this, the heart of such an empire would make for an exciting battleground, as the internal conflicts of the race could be explored.
Two honorable mentions would be Valinwood and Elswyr, both under the Altmer’s jurisdiction. These two locales would be wise options if the map features more areas or receives an expansion pack. Visiting the dense woodlands of the Wood Elves and the Khajiit, in general, would entice many players.
High Rock
The next major example is High Rock. This province served as the main setting of Daggerfall. While mostly procedurally generated, the game’s map was technically one of the largest on record within the medium. Overall, the Bretons receive some of the least attention out of all of Tamriel’s races. Therefore, giving them a strong lore reboot could demonstrate Bethesda’s world-building talents.
While High Rock is heavily implied to be a standard medieval kingdom, the aforementioned second entry of the series established world-reaching lore at the heart of the province. The biggest would be its lore provided for the “Aedra” pantheon and its connection to the material world of Mundus. Therefore, a return to the nation with next-gen technology could be a cosmic event.
Like the Summerset Isles, High Rock has an adjacent locale, the desert nation of Hammerfell. After several games set within the northern and temperate provinces of the Empire, Hammerfell would greatly diversify the vistas explored by the series. Finally, the small nation of Orsinium is nestled between the two, which would give the Orc race time in the limelight.
A New Continent for Elder Scrolls 6
Finally, a new continent would be one of the largest possibilities for a new Elder Scrolls 6 setting. Throughout the five mainline entries and spinoffs, most corners of Tamriel have been thoroughly explored. This has become especially true with the release of Elder Scrolls Online and its frequent expansions. Because of this, the continent holds few surprises for players that Elder Scrolls 6 could use to hook players.
Fortunately, the series lore hinted at several continents across the ocean. To the south lies the Elves’ original home of Aldmeris, to the north lies the humans’ frozen home of Atmora, and to the west lies Yokuda. However, the most interesting continent would have to be Akivir, a land filled with frozen giants, snake people, and the Samurai-inspired culture that inspired the Blades. A game set on Akivir would be unlike any other before.
