With the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, many fans are theorizing about what this latest entry in the series will look like. One of the biggest surprises about the game is that Zelda will be the playable character. Because of this, many wonder about Link’s role in the story.
Because Link has been the main character in every game thus far, there are many possibilities for him as a deuteragonist. Some have been done before, while others would break the mold. Here is a breakdown of the biggest possibilities regarding Link’s role in the upcoming Echoes of Wisdom.
Link Will Take on Zelda’s Role

The first theory regarding Link’s role in the game is that he will take on Zelda’s role. From the earliest descriptions of the game, gamers know that it begins with our hero being abducted by Ganon. Therefore, Zelda must save him in a clever subversion of their usual roles while dealing with mysterious “rifts” forming throughout Hyrule.
Besides Mario’s Princess Peach, Zelda is the most iconic princess in gaming. In later titles, she has also proven herself as a strong, action-oriented female lead. The last time players got to play as Zelda in a mainline game was during the infamous CDI games. Therefore, Zelda leading this game would be a great way for her to live up to the status of its namesake.
Zelda remains a compelling character through most modern appearances, which is especially true with her larger role in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. One possibility is that Link will finally get a proper speaking role after nearly four decades. Conversely, this new, lighthearted incarnation of Zelda could also get new character work when elevated to the player character role.
Echoes of Wisdom Will Make Him a Boss
The next main possibility for Link’s role in the game is that he will be possessed and become a villain/boss. Out of all the possibilities, this is one of the most interesting. Given that he has fought as the player character for most of the series, having Zelda face him as a boss would make for a highly subversive twist to his role.
The Legend of Zelda series has toyed with the idea of an “evil Link” or a boss version of him through various games. The most prominent example would be the beloved recurring miniboss “Dark Link.” This dark version of him had all of his moves and abilities, testing the players’ creativity. The villain Girahim from Skyward Sword was also set up as an “evil counterpart.”
This is also a plausible development of events. Ganon has proven himself a powerful sorcerer and manipulator across his various appearances. Whether through possession or manipulation, the idea of Link joining the dark side and fighting for Ganon could make this one of the most unique stories told in Zelda.
He Will Be Playable Multiple Times
Finally, one more prediction for Echoes of Wisdom is that Link will be playable at multiple points throughout the game. Nintendo already revealed that Link would be playable in the opening before being consumed by Ganon’s portal. While the full plot has yet to be revealed, there could be several other periods in the story where Link takes the lead; be it through side chapters or team-ups.
Even when she wasn’t a directly playable hero, Zelda played a valuable support role during various adventures. The best example would be Spirit Tracks for the Nintendo DS, where her ghost would dutifully aid Link in battle and with solving puzzles. Her archery skills have also proven useful in games such as Twilight Princess. Therefore, Link becoming an “assist” character would be an interesting turn. Even outside of these theories, the possibilities for Link’s new roles remain endless.
