Despite massive advancements in technology, many PS1 games remain popular amongst the gaming community. Whether due to nostalgia or simply the fun these games bring, they are still captivating and entertaining. Here is a look at some of the classic PS1 games that are still worth playing today and suggestions on how to play them!

There are two main methods for playing classic PS1 games: hardware or emulators. A gamer can use the original PlayStation 1 console. However, this will only work if the original game CD can also be acquired. Later consoles can also be utilized, but again, either the CD or a digital download must be available. The easiest way to enjoy these classics is through the use of an emulator. Emulators like ePSXe, RetroArch, and PCSX-Reloaded are a few emulator options that are highly compatible with PS1.

Final Fantasy VII

One of the most iconic RPG PS1 games of all time, Final Fantasy VII still captivates players. In fact, it is so popular that two remakes have been produced in recent years. This game has a compelling storyline, memorable characters, and amazing gameplay mechanics. This role-playing game follows Cloud, the main character, and a group that is trying to stop a corporation from using the life essence of their world as an energy source. Cloud and his team also pursue a superhuman who seeks to wound the planet and harness its healing powers to become a GOD. Even though there are remakes the original owns the charm that caused a generation of gamers to love the RPG world!

Resident Evil 2

A cornerstone in the horror genre of gaming, Resident Evil 2 is an icon. This PS1 game builds atmospheric tension, involves intricate puzzles, and has a heart-pounding storyline. The elements of this game make it a present deliverer of thrills and chills no matter its age. The player controls two separate characters, Leon and Claire, as they try to escape Raccoon City. The residents of this region have all been transformed into Zombies! The gameplay focuses on exploration puzzles and combat.

Gran Turismo 2

“Gran Turismo 2” is a PS1 game for any racing game enthusiast. This game offers a realistic driving experience with a vast selection of cars as well as tracks. In this game, the player competes against a digitally generated challenger. In the Simulation Mode, the player earns a license, pays for vehicles, and earns trophies. In Arcade Mode, players can freely choose vehicles and can enable a damage feature for gameplay. This game’s simulation and depth of concept make it a popular option even today for racing lovers.

MTV Music Generator

MTV Music Generator” is a musical creation tool that allows players to compose, edit, and mix music tracks on the PS1 game console. When it was released in 1999, it was very powerful and included excellent tools, considering the limitations of the PlayStation 1 console. Tools that allow for track creation, editing, and customization make a revisit of this classic relevant. The simplicity of the environment and the creativity the game brings will interest those who enjoy composing beats and playing with the intricacies of sound. This game also offers a glimpse into the first days of digital music creation.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2” set the bar for the skateboarding and esports genre. The game controls, tricks, and engaging design created an exhilarating experience for the user. This edition of the game takes place in an urban setting. The introduction of cash rewards and a new ambiance created through punk rock and hip-hop music was a hit with the gaming community. Several modes of gameplay were also introduced in this release. Career mode allowed for character evolution and objective completion. The gamer played without objectives in free-play mode, and multiplayer mode featured competitive games. This version also offered a level editor, allowing customization of the different levels.

A classic PS1 game list is incomplete without adding “Tekken 3“. This game is often viewed as one of the best fighter games ever made. The game introduced an intricate combat system, a diverse roster of characters, and a smooth gameplay experience. This version was so popular that an arcade version was also released. The home version included a beat ’em’ up mode and a bonus mode called Tekken Ball Mode. Tekken 3 is currently the 5th best-selling Playstation game of all time. That alone makes it worth a spin around the gaming block if only to see what all the fuss is about.
