PS4 Games Being Cut By Sony in 2026 in Massive Announcement

Sony PS5

Alright, folks, we’ve got a bit of a bummer to share. Big news coming straight from the Sony camp: they will be slashing PS4 games from their PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. And brace yourself; this change is coming faster than you can say, “Game over.” We’re talking January 2026, people! It seems like Sony’s setting its sights purely on PlayStation 5, which is a pretty bold move, don’t you think? But hey, it’s been a while since the PS4 hit the shelves back in 2013, and the PS5 has been around for more than four years now, so maybe it’s about time.

What We Know So Far About Sony’s Decision

Remember those monthly titles we got at no extra cost and the Game Pass-style subscription service? Well, as Sony starts to fall head-over-heels for PS5, our beloved PS4 games will not be the star of the show anymore. They’ll show up from time to time, but really, it’s more like a guest appearance on PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog.

Don’t panic, though! The games you’ve already bagged aren’t going anywhere. Titles from the Games Catalog will still be playable until they take a bow and exit the catalog during the monthly refresh. And Sony assures us that they’re going to keep jazzing up the PlayStation Plus experience. They’re talking about special deals, online multiplayer access, online game storage, and more.

With their eyes glued to the PS5, Sony’s pumped about adding new PS5 games each month for us to dive into. And even though it’s a little unclear if PS4 games are going to find a new home in the PS Plus Games Catalog’s Classics Catalog — which currently hosts a medley of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 games — we’re sure Sony will throw us a bone closer to the time.

Sony also mentioned that most of us have already traded our PS4 controllers in for the PS5 and are enjoying the new kid on the block. And, really, can you blame us? So, while it’s a bit of a downer that PS4 games are taking a backseat, it’s also kind of thrilling. I mean, who knows what new PS5 adventures await us?

Final Thoughts

It sucks that Sony has made the decision to stop distributing PS4 games next year, but I understand why. The rumors of a PS6 and the boom of the PS5 have caused Sony to want to cash in. The way I see it, at least they didn’t take them away without warning. Everyone has time to grab their favorite titles, and they won’t lose them either. At the end of the day, Sony is a business trying to make money, and this, unfortunately, is a decision that has to be made.
