Rathian, the Queen of the Land, is officially making a reappearance in Monster Hunter Wilds. This comes as a surprise to literally no existing Monster Hunter fan, but it’s nice to finally see 6th generation footage of the Flying Wyvern. That footage was first shown off at this year’s New York Comic Con. Fans have been begging for that footage since that showing took place. Now that we have it, let’s analyze the few seconds of sixth-gen Rathian we’ve gotten to see so far.
The Queen Returns
In total, the Monster Hunter social media team graced us with only 12 seconds of Rathian footage. It consisted of the hunter sneaking behind it to grab an egg, only to be caught by the Flying Wyvern and fired upon. While that’s not much compared to what we have seen with other monsters, it’s still nice that the footage has finally been made public. Until now, we’ve only seen sneakily captured pictures of the sixth-gen Queen of the Land. As I’ve mentioned, her return comes as no shock. She has been in every Monster Hunter game ever made. Having a game without her would be like having one without a Great Sword.
An Eggy Adventure
The short snippet we’ve seen of her also confirmed the return of the dreaded egg quests. For those who don’t know, those quests are infamous among the Monster Hunter community. They involve players going to a monster’s nest, stealing an egg, and trying their best to get back to camp without the egg breaking. The real kicker is that the egg breaks whenever hunters run out of stamina, fall too far, or get hit by a monster. Unsurprisingly, monsters get angry when their eggs are stolen. That means players have to masterfully avoid the rightfully upset parents or defeat them to secure the stolen prize.
All Returning Monsters So Far
Including Rathian, there are a total of four returning monsters. Rathalos, the King of the Skies, is also making his expected return. That was confirmed during the reveal trailer during The Game Awards in 2023. Since then, we haven’t seen head nor spiky tail of Rathian’s male counterpart. Yian Kut-Ku, the Strange Bird, was confirmed to be in the game in late September thanks to an “Extended Kut” version of a previously released trailer. Finally, Congalala, the Pink Fur Beast, was confirmed to be in Wilds during this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Its return had mixed reactions because its fight can be rather unpleasant and smelly.
When To Expect More
For those antsy for even more news about Monster Hunter Wilds, they might not have to wait long. We are closing in on the 10th anniversary of The Game Awards. With the big event comes big trailers and announcements. That could easily mean that we’ll get another glimpse of the heavily anticipated game from Capcom. This could be an official reveal of how Rathalos looks in the game or perhaps the much-desired return of Lagiacrus. However, there’s also a chance we might see something different or nothing at all. If the latter happens, thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer for the February 28, 2025 release date.
