Remedy’s Status of Control Sequel 5-Year Development

Remedy Entertainment has released updated information on several projects, including a planned Control sequel and Control multiplayer spinoff, Project Condor. The announcement, made in their somewhat optimistic half-year earnings report, follows last October’s critically acclaimed release of Alan Wake II.

The much-lauded Control, released in 2019, garnered a slew of award nominations and wins and has ultimately sold over 4 million units. The company formally announced Control 2 in 2022 after working on the project under the title Codename Heron. Though little information was given at the time, the project was moving forward under a co-publishing agreement with 505 Games, the original publisher of Control.

In February of this year, Remedy informed investors that it had acquired full control over the IP, saying, “The Control franchise is in the core of Remedy. Having acquired the full rights to Control, Condor, and Control 2, Remedy is now in a position to make the right product and business decisions focusing on long-term franchise growth.”

Remedy Climbing to Success

The healthy critical response to Alan Wake II, combined with continuing sales for Control, paints a picture of a studio in its prime. Gaining creative and commercial control of their most successful game seems to bode well for the Control sequel as it continues to push forward. According to the company, the game “has progressed to the production readiness stage.

The development team reached an important milestone in delivering a build of the game showcasing several important features in playable form. This has supported the ongoing business negotiations. The development team is working towards scaling up the production of the project.”

“Production readiness” likely means the game is still in a very early stage of development, so it may be some time before anything concrete is revealed. With much of the creative team behind the studio’s previous titles having moved up the ranks or onto other ventures, it remains to be seen who will take leadership of the Control sequel production. The company had also announced in 2021 that a Control multiplayer spin-off, Project Condor, was in the works. The earnings announcement this year described the project as being in full production, with various maps and missions having undergone playtesting.

Shifting Gears

While headliners like a Control sequel and a resuscitated Max Payne continue to move forward, one new undertaking has found itself on the chopping block. The illusively-monikered Codename Kestrel, another multiplayer project, was in its early stages after having been rebooted from a previous effort, Codename Vanguard. Developers from the team have been shifted onto other projects.

As a studio that consistently releases games popular with both players and critics, Remedy appears poised to protect its record by focusing on its flagship IPs. By allocating resources to the continuation and revival of its most celebrated and lucrative efforts, Remedy stands to satisfy both its returning fans and its investors in equal measure.
