Revisiting Assassin’s Creed 3 Before Shadows

Assassin’s Creed is one of the most iconic franchises of Ubisoft. From the original game to the release of Shadows which is happening this year, there are various games in the franchise. Assassin’s Creed 3 was the fifth major installment in the franchise and it wrapped up the story of Desmond Miles that started in the first game. This game was released on October 30, 2012, with a remastered version released on March 29, 2019. It is one of the best games in the series and now with the latest game on the horizon is the perfect time to reflect on it.

Story and Setting

Assassin’s Creed 3 takes place during the American Revolution and covers significant years. This is thanks to the massive time jump that is present in the game. Players must play as Haytham Kenway who comes to the colonies before the Revolutionary Wars. Players play as characters and recruit various allies in search of ancient artifacts. However, in a shocking twist, it is revealed that Haytham is a Templar and we have been recruiting other members of the brotherhood.

Fast forward a few years and we have Connor Kenway, who is a native to these lands and the son of a Templar Master. The village of Connor is burned and his mother is killed apparently by the Templars. In search of revenge, he visits Achilles a former Assassin. There he is trained in the Assassin’s ways and is taught all the tenets of the creed. He later becomes a part of the Revolutionary War as he is on his hunt to destroy the Templar order.

The setting of the game, the environment, and the aesthetic are top-notch. These games always do an amazing job of keeping historical accuracy when they design the world and it shows in Assassin’s Creed 3. The character of the protagonist is also very well thought out and is underappreciated by the community. Most of it has to do with the fact that Connor came after Ezio, who is extremely beloved by the fans.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Assassin’s Creed 3 featured an upgraded game engine and came with an impressive visual upgrade. The gameplay also feels smooth in this game. Players are given more freedom in their parkour abilities thanks to their being able to parkour through trees and forests. The cities and buildings are also well populated, allowing immersion when players traverse through them.

Side missions were some of the best in Assassin’s Creed games which added much more depth to the character of Connor Kenway. The story was emotional and gripping. Hunting and crafting were also introduced which was a fun thing to experiment with. The combat of this game was such an improvement on the previous games. The sword fights were fluid, the animations were brutal, and the weapon variety was amazing. Assassin’s Creed 3 is one of the best if not the best game in the franchise which is greatly underappreciated by the community.
