Devil May Cry 3 is the fan favorite. This game came out almost twenty years ago. Even back in 2005, Devil May Cry was a colossal series. Capcom released the third installment on the PlayStation 2, revitalizing the series. The first game was a beloved classic, but the second game could not have been more of a failure. Close to two decades later, Devil May Cry 3 is still one of the greatest action games ever made. Here’s why.
Devil May Cry 3’s Underappreciated Story
Many times for games like these, the story is seen as an afterthought. Many reviewers will say something along the lines of “The story is alright, but the gameplay is the most important part”. This is not false, but storytelling and character writing is a weakness of many action games. Devil May Cry 3 runs a clinic on many of these action games that struggle with telling a compelling and complex story. This story only has a total of four main characters, not including bosses. There’s Dante the playable character, Vergil his brother and main villain, Arkham, the man pulling the strings, and Lady, Arkham’s daughter who is trying to stop her father.
The genius of this game’s story is how simple it is. It’s all about family. Dante and Vergil’s family, as well as Arkham and Lady’s, and how both families’ problems intersect and reflect off of each other. This game is a prequel, featuring Dante at his youngest. In this story, he changes from a young man who denies he even has a family, to a man who recognizes and embraces his demonic and human heritage. It’s beautiful stuff. Not to mention the incredible acting, and the energetic directing, all of it is just immaculately done.
The Style Revamp
The gameplay on display here is nothing to scoff at either. The first DMC game had a great, yet relatively simple gameplay system. Two weapons, a handful of guns, and tons of ways to attack the demonic horde. Devil May Cry 3 just adds onto those mechanics and then some. Dante has double the amount of combos he did in that first game, and even more brand-new guns and devil arms to choose from.
The biggest change here is the style system. In Devil May Cry 3, Dante can equip one of six styles. Each style has its purpose and is used by pressing the circle button. One style has him using more melee attacks, one has him being more evasive, one has him stopping time, and one even gives you the ability to negate all damage (if properly timed). These styles do wonders for the game’s replayability, depth, and player expression. Every person will play differently, and that’s exceptional for good video game design.
The End? Don’t Bet On It
Replaying Devil May Cry 3 in 2024 is something that should be done more often. This game is shockingly still relevant and super fun to play. It’s an interesting case too, because of little old Devil May Cry 5. This game is hailed by fans of the series as being the pinnacle of what this franchise has to offer. And they’re correct, for the most part.
Devil May Cry 5 has a good story, with some of the most satisfying character moments in the series’ history. There are also four playable characters in that game if you count DLC. Devil May Cry 5 might be the most modern and best DMC game to play, but Devil May Cry 3 just has that special charm to it. Maybe it’s because it came out on the PS2, maybe it’s because of how simple the game is, but it just has an X-factor that can never be truly replicated by other games in the series. DMC 3 is just a game that one needs to play to understand how truly epic it is.
