Revisiting Mega Man Legends 3 in 2024

Mega Man Legends 3

Mega Man Legends 3 was a video game title initially helmed by Capcom. The continuation of the Legends series was announced in 2010. Plans were to release the game on the Nintendo 3DS. This news came with much fanfare for fans looking ahead to Volnutt’s journey. However, Capcom canceled Legends 3, leaving the series on a cliffhanger. Despite its cancellation, it deserves another chance. The game could offer a resurgence to the dormant Legends franchise.

Mega Man Legends’ Role

Mega Man Legends was a sub-series in the greater Mega Man universe. The timeline puts it at the tail-end of the Mega Man series. The Classic Mega Man, X, Zero, and ZX Series lead to the Legends period. The series consisted of three titles, with Legends being the planned fourth installment. The titles include the original Mega Man Legends, released in 1997 for the PlayStation. A prequel titled The Misadventures of Tron Bonne was released, focusing on one of the sub-series iconic additions. The last piece of the series is Mega Man Legends 2, released in 2000.

The Legends series is a notable addition to Mega Man’s mythos. It takes place in the far future of the Mega Man timeline. Most of the world has been swallowed up by oceans, leaving behind a few islands. The games provide a massive departure for the series. Instead of being 2D sidescrolling platformers, the game pushes Mega Man into the 3D landscape. Legends is a 3D action-adventure title focusing on the journey of a teen digger, Volnutt. Since its release, the Legends series has become a cult classic for the Mega Man franchise. It is not hard to see why people would want a fourth entry.

New Plot, New Characters

Mega Man Legends 3 did not provide any plot details. Due to the game’s cancellation, there is not enough information. The most obvious choice is rectifying the dangling plot thread from Legends 2. In the last title, Volnutt flew to Elysium to stop the Carbon Reinitialization Program and defeat Sera. Gatz, an ally who merged with his shuttle, helped transport him. Volnutt and Sera fought, but during the battle, Gatz died. Volnutt is left stranded on the planet with no means of getting home. The story of Legends 2 ends with Roll and the rest of the cast building a rocket to rescue Volnutt. Legends 3 could have connected these two plots to bring our hero back into the setting.

Two characters appeared in the official art for Mega Man Legends 3. These two characters are members of the rebellious “Bright Bats” team. These wild-hearted youngsters would factor into Legends 3’s plot. The first is a young, happy-go-lucky girl named Aero. The second is a teenage boy with red hair tied into a ponytail. His name was Barrett, and he would be a playable character. Overall, Aero and Barrett provide fun additions to Legends’ main cast. However, they sadly have gone unused due to Legends 3’s cancellation. Any future appearances for the two are unlikely due to their obscure nature.

Save Legends 3

Mega Man Legends 3’s cancellation is disappointing for many fans of the 3D Shooter franchise. The game’s limited appeal could be attributed to its discontinuation. The loss of Legends 3 made an uproar in the Mega Man fanbase. The disappointment was met not only by game developers but also by long-time fans.

Mega Man Legends 3’s cancellation caused Mega Man fans worldwide to unite. Fans showed their love by making a Facebook group for Legends 3. The group name was “100,000 Strong for Bringing Back Mega Man Legends 3”. The community showed appreciation for the Legends Series. Their goal was to get Capcom to resume development on the series. By late April 2012, the community reached 100,000 fans for their performance.

Why Legends 3 Needs to Come Out

Mega Man 11 was released in 2018 to critical acclaim from Mega Man fans. The iconic blue bomber made a splash for his beloved return. Fans have been clamoring for a new Mega Man title since. Mega Man 11 shows that even years later, Mega Man can still be fun.

Interest in developing Mega Man Legends 3 is still apparent. Keiji Inafune, the father of Mega Man, showed interest in the project in 2014. Mega Man Legends has been mostly dormant since Legends 3. Despite its retreat into obscurity, the spark is still there. Mega Man Legends 3 deserves a release to finish Volnutt’s story. Moreover, Capcom can show appreciation to the fans who supported the series during its cancellation.
