Roboquest is a 4-Star Powerful Mix of Borderlands and Doom

Roboquest, a fundamental combination of Borderlands and Doom, combines looter shooter, some fancy roguelike elements, and the adrenaline rush of fast-paced action… with a dash of killer robots. I have invested 121 hours into the addicting madness of this robotic mayhem since the year 2021, and it was released back in 2020 for early access. It’s a fun experience to dive into. Roboquest is out of early access and into its second post-release update with much content to discover.

Exploring Gameplay and Mechanics

Roboquest, developed by RyseUp Studios, is known for its fantastic FPS gunplay elements combined with the features of an action roguelike game. While traversing every randomly generated level from start to finish, there are swarms of robots to shoot through. What expresses the fast-paced essence of the game is the movement. The speed at which your character moves while gunning down the enemy robots, upon observation, shares a similarity to the classic FPS shooter Doom.

Skills-wise, it also operates in a role-playing fashion, considering the experience you gain after killing grunts, elites, and bosses. Once you acquire enough experience, you level up and choose which perk you want to apply to your character to make them stronger for the remainder of the run depending on which character you pick. You’re customizing your character’s build as you go.

On top of that, there are six classes of robots to choose from before starting the run:

  • Guardian
  • Commando
  • Recon
  • Ranger
  • Engineer
  • Elementalist

Each class has its perks and abilities to select from during runs to make them as strong as possible. As you go, there’s a chance for enemies to drop weapons upon death. Observing this reminds me of how the Borderlands games cherish the same feature that Roboquest was influenced by.

Blasting Music

The soundtrack for Roboquest provides an adrenaline-pumping feeling while playing. Each level of the game has its musical high-octane track with killer beats, giving the player a surge of energy like they’re ready to tackle any obstacle. Noisecream, the Russian musician and sound artist, created the soundtrack with over 30 tracks, a huge accomplishment and impact for the game.

Roboquest’s Arsenal Update

Recently, an update was released that offered a variety of content in the form of new weapons. 9 new weapons were brought into the game, along with a new area and resource to obtain during runs. There are also quality-of-life updates applied to keep the game balanced.

Before the update was released, large amounts of weapons were available to acquire during runs. As I was playing I was experimenting on which loadout of weapons work well together, allowing for better synergy and strategy for current or future runs. Then the update came and there’s a lot more to work with.

Is It Worth The Rush?

This glorifying shooter has a ton to offer such as classes, perks, weapons, level paths, and even gameplay difficulty. It has enough replayability to the point where you can play it repeatedly to try and complete it at a harder difficulty, or attempt to speedrun it. In more ways than one, it’s a fun and addicting game.

The gameplay and progression are exciting, and the soundtrack fits in well when playing the game. I recommend anyone interested in a good roguelike FPS shooter to give this one a solid go, and there are upcoming updates planned for the game this year so there will be a lot more to look forward to.
