Rollback Netcode has Revived Marvel vs Capcom 2

Marvel vs Capcom 2 has been more relevant now than ever. In the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection recently released on modern platforms, players can experience the entire legacy of this series. The biggest star of this collection is now doubt Marvel vs Capcom 2 and the fact that this legendary game now has rollback netcode officially, it has been alive and more popular than ever.

Marvel vs Capcom 2’s Many Versions

Marvel vs Capcom 2 is a video game that debuted in the arcade environment. Back in 2000, arcades were still relatively popular. Not long after its arcade release, the game was ported to the contemporary consoles. These consoles were the Dreamcast, the Xbox, and the PlayStation 2. All of these ports had their drawbacks, however. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions were good ports on the surface but had many elements that were slightly different than the arcade versions, like game speed, animations, and such.

Many professional players swear by the Dreamcast version, touting the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 to be nearly arcade-perfect. For tournaments, this was the main version of the game used. In 2009, Capcom ported a couple of Marvel vs Capcom games to modern hardware. Capcom made Marvel vs Capcom: Origins, a game that was comprised of Marvel Super Heroes, and Marvel vs Capcom: Clash of Superheroes. They also ported Marvel vs Capcom 2 to consoles. The online functions for the game worked well enough, but the problem was in 2013, Capcom had to pull the game from online stores due to licensing problems with Marvel, ending the game’s selling online.

It is safe to say that now, in our modern age, we live in the best timeline for the series. These games are finally re-released, and the fans can enjoy them to their heart’s content. Not only can fans play Marvel vs Capcom 2 online via this collection, but they can also play any of the classic games from the Marvel vs Capcom franchise. Whether it’s Marvel vs Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, or even X-Men: Children of the Atom. All of these games are officially re-released in this collection and have incredible rollback netcode. Now what is rollback netcode?

It’s a kind of netcode that developers implement into video games, particularly fighting games, where inputs must be precise. Usually, fighting games have a delay-based netcode. This means that if player one hits attack, player one will only see his character move once player two sees it. Even at peak internet performance, there will be a delay from the time the player presses the button to when it happens. Rollback netcode does something incredible by cutting out the middleman. There is no delay in rollback, the system is predicting what the player will do next, and sending that image to the player.

MvC2 Feels Brand New

This system is man-made, hence, not perfect, but no system is. It is pound-for-pound the best online experience, especially in fighting games. Now, one of the most acclaimed and world-famous fighting games of all time has it. And this is incredible. The matchmaking for Marvel vs Capcom 2, on PC at least, is quick and responsive. Lag is close to minimal, and being able to play with rollback is a dream come true.

It truly feels like Marvel vs Capcom 2 has been unleashed again, almost like a brand-new game. This writer is used to playing Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, so having to learn an entirely different game is intimidating, but also so exciting and fun. Here’s to a healthy life cycle for this collection, and to even more fun, hype matches.
