Chrono Trigger Remake

New Chrono Trigger Remake May Or May Not Have Accidentally Leaked

Earlier in the day on May 2, 2025, it appeared that the developer of the Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest games, Yuji Horii, may have let slip an upcoming Chrono Trigger remake. While at a Comic-Con panel in Naples, it was reported that Horii, through Japanese and Italian language interpretation, mentioned an upcoming remake, and was then promptly scolded for doing so. Late in the evening hours of May 2, though, a group got hold of the clip and translated each word, and it seems as though the remake was never directly mentioned. So what took place?

Chrono Trigger Remake Rumors Take Over Social Media

Yuji Horii, developer of the game Chrono Trigger, a massively popular RPG produced by Square Enix, was speaking at a panel in a Comic-Con event in Naples, Italy. According to reports of people at the event, Horii made reference to an upcoming Remake of the game, and then someone whispered something into his ear. According to Game Rant, as referenced by people at the event:

According to Reddit user LawfulnessSure125 Horii ‘covered his mouth as if he’d just said something he shouldn’t have.’ Reddit user TheFishyOne, who was in attendance, confirmed this account, saying that they were among those who cheered at the mention of a Chrono Trigger remake. TheFishyOne added that the translator at the event asked Horii for confirmation, to which they were told, ‘You heard nothing.’

There would be some sense to a possible Chrono Trigger Remake. For one, the game is on its 30th anniversary this year, some commemorating the momentous date would be sensible. Second, the game is largely considered not only one of the best RPGs of all time, but possibly one of the best games period. It was not the most well-known at the time, but it was highly critically acclaimed and remains so today, despite not being particularly accessible. Third, the JRPG category has been trending recently, and Square itself has capitalized on multiple remakes and remasters of similar IPs, such as Final Fantasy, Mana, SaGa, and Dragon Quest.

With all these factors in mind, a Chrono Trigger remake would by no means be out of the question. However, before fans start jumping with joy, some ice-cold water was thrown on the theory late Friday night. After a supposed clip of the interaction was originally translated to confirm what others were suggesting, the gaming company Gematsu corrected the theory. According to them, it was the translator who mentioned it, not Horii himself.

Late update: footage from the event is out, and Horii himself never actually says anything about a remake of Chrono Trigger (like at all—it was all the interpreter). Sorry to burst everyone’s bubble. Link: www.twitch.tv/videos/24482…

Well, that certainly puts a dagger in some fans’ hearts. Of course, the rumor was just that to begin with, and not a fact, so all players should have taken it with a grain of salt to begin with. Also, this does not mean that a remake of Chrono Trigger is not in the works, just that Horii did not personally announce it. It would still make sense that Square Enix would revisit the IP in some capacity, especially given they already did so for Chrono Cross, the sequel game. We will just have to wait a little longer to see if anything is confirmed.

Final Thoughts

This experience is a great example as to why the gaming community needs to cool its jets when it comes to rumors. Until an official representative for a gaming company announces something intentionally and directly, nothing is set in stone and plenty of wrong information and leaks can amount to little (looking at you, Final Fantasy IX Remake rumors!). That said, it is certainly possible Square may have a trick up their sleeve regarding a Chrono Trigger Remake. The gaming community will just have to wait until they say so themselves.
