Don’t Miss the Exciting Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined Demo on January 7th!

The Dragon Quest franchise has been semi-quiet in the last few years, but Dragon’s Quest VII: Reimagined is set to unleash itself on the world on February 5th. But wait, you say, that’s almost a whole month! What will you do until then? Fear not, for a demo launches on January 7th, which will let you get your RPG fix until the full game releases.

The Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined Demo

According to Polygon, the demo for Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined launches on January 7th, and your progress from the demo will carry over to the main game. The full game will launch on February 5th for the PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, meaning just about every gamer should get a chance to try it.

How much of the game will the demo reveal? Square Enix’s official site for the game does not currently mention the demo or discuss how much gameplay the demo will have. However, judging by how RPG demos usually go, the demo will likely get the player to the main quest in order to get the player hooked. There’s also a good chance that the demo will end at some dramatic point in the story so that the player will want to happen next.

The description on Square Enix’s official website reads as follows: “Set sail on an adventure spanning past and present in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined! As a bright-eyed young fisherman’s son, you’ve lived your entire life on the peaceful island of Estard. Your journey begins with a simple question: is there more to the world than this small island kingdom?”

Of course, since this is an RPG, you aren’t content to remain a simple fisherman’s son. You and a friend stumble on the Shrine of Mysteries, which sends you back into the past and you will, of course, have to save the world. According to the official site, this remake of Dragon Quest VII “brings a timeless classic to life in a whole new way with charming diorama visuals, updated gameplay mechanics, and a streamlined story.”

So, What Does That Mean?

The game’s description on Nintendo’s official site offers some more information on how the remake improves on the original game. The remake tells the story with a smoother flow, helping it to not feel so bloated. The battle system has also been revised to include an auto-battle option, instant defeats if the enemies are weaker than the battle party, and vocational perks.

Speaking of those vocations, there is a new “Moonlighting mechanic” that lets you choose two vocations and reap the benefits from both. This should encourage replayability, since you can mix and match different vocations and combine them to complement your individual play style. In addition, the diorama visuals from the trailer look beautiful, giving the game a new vibrance. I love 2.5-D games because of their unique look, and Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined will probably be a lovely visual feast.

I’m Playing the Demo!

I will definitely be downloading the demo of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined on my Switch or Switch 2, and I will likely wishlist it for the future. While I’ve only played a handful of the Dragon Quest games and I haven’t played the original Dragon Quest VII, I love me a good RPG, and Square Enix has a tendency to provide high-quality instant classics. Perhaps if the Dragon Quest VII remake sells well, Square Enix will get the message that people want the series to continue. Perhaps we will even get a Dragon Quest Builders 3 sometime.
