In Pokémon Legends Z-A, these metallic titans are not just defensive walls but also offensive powerhouses, thanks to the return of Mega Evolutions. To help you forge the strongest team possible, we’ve ranked all the confirmed Steel-type Pokémon from the god-tier S-Tier to the developing D-Tier based on their combat effectiveness, stats, and game-changing Mega forms.

S-Tier
This tier is reserved for the absolute best of the best. These Pokémon define the meta with their incredible stats, powerful dual-typings, and devastating Mega Evolutions that make them nearly unstoppable.
- Mega Metagross: A pseudo-legendary that becomes a true monster upon Mega Evolving. With its phenomenal Attack, Defense, and Speed, plus the Tough Claws ability boosting contact moves, Mega Metagross is a top-tier physical sweeper that’s also incredibly bulky.
- Mega Lucario: Mega Lucario is a premier offensive threat. Its Adaptability ability doubles the power of its STAB moves, turning Close Combat and Flash Cannon into weapons of mass destruction. Its high Speed and mixed attacking stats make it versatile and unpredictable.
- Mega Scizor: With only one weakness (a 4x vulnerability to Fire), Mega Scizor is a fantastic bulky attacker. Its Technician ability powers up weaker moves like Bullet Punch, giving it a priority STAB move that can pick off faster opponents.
- Mega Aggron, Mega Steelix, & Mega Mawile: This trio of Megas brings immense power and utility. Mega Aggron becomes a pure Steel-type with the Filter ability, making it one of the most resilient physical walls in the game. Mega Steelix is a defensive behemoth with a colossal Defense stat. Mega Mawile’s Huge Power ability doubles its Attack, turning it into a tiny terror with a fantastic Steel/Fairy typing.
- Mega Excadrill & Mega Skarmory: These new Megas enhance already great Pokémon. Mega Excadrill gets a massive boost to its already high Attack, making it a terrifying sweeper. Mega Skarmory improves upon its excellent defensive stats, solidifying its role as a premier physical wall and hazard setter.
- Aegislash: A truly unique Pokémon with its Stance Change ability. Aegislash can switch between an impenetrable defensive form and a hyper-offensive attacking form, allowing it to adapt to any situation on the fly.
A-Tier
A-Tier Pokémon are exceptional combatants that can easily anchor a successful team. They are incredibly powerful and reliable, falling just short of the sheer dominance of the S-Tier.
- Metagross & Lucario: Even without Mega Evolving, these two are top-class. Metagross is a bulky pseudo-legendary with great stats all around, while Lucario is a versatile mixed attacker with priority moves.
- Scizor & Excadrill: Both are phenomenal in their base forms. Scizor’s Bug/Steel typing and access to Technician-boosted Bullet Punch make it a constant threat. Excadrill’s Steel/Ground typing provides excellent offensive coverage and an immunity to Electric-type moves.
- Klefki: Don’t let its appearance fool you; Klefki is one of the best support Pokémon in the game. Its Steel/Fairy typing gives it a wealth of resistances, and its Prankster ability gives priority to status moves like Thunder Wave and Reflect, allowing it to control the flow of battle.
B-Tier
These Pokémon are solid, dependable choices that perform their roles well but have more noticeable flaws or are more specialized than the tiers above.
- Aggron, Steelix, & Skarmory: This group consists of excellent physical walls that truly shine once they Mega Evolve. In their base forms, they are still very effective defensive pivots but can be overwhelmed by strong special attackers.
- Mawile: In its base form, Mawile’s stats are quite low. Its fantastic Steel/Fairy typing and access to Intimidate give it some utility, but it relies almost entirely on its Mega Evolution to be a real threat.
C-Tier
This tier is primarily composed of middle-stage evolutions. They are a necessary step on the path to greatness but are not recommended for high-difficulty battles until they are fully evolved.
- Doublade, Lairon, Metang, & Honedge: These Pokémon are on their way to becoming top-tier threats but lack the stats to compete with fully evolved Pokémon. Doublade can be surprisingly bulky with an Eviolite, but the others are simply waiting to reach their final forms.
D-Tier
This tier consists of first-stage Pokémon that are not viable for combat. Their only purpose is to be trained and evolved into their much more powerful final forms.
- Beldum & Aron: As the first stages of pseudo-legendary and powerful three-stage lines, these Pokémon have incredible potential. However, in their base forms, they are very weak and should be evolved as a priority.
