Rumor: New Deus Ex Game Talks “Actively” Happening

Deus Ex getting another game?

The rumor mill keeps churning, and we’ll keep wondering if it’ll ever be true. The rumor of today? Whether or not Deus Ex is continuing on! Yep, another whisper in the wind about a new Deus Ex game. Many fans (myself included) are highly skeptical because, let’s be honest, we’ve been here before. Burned once, emotionally wrecked twice.

Considering we haven’t seen a verified source from Eidos-Montréal, we need to lean on the side of caution when considering this. Always see it in writing before making any commitment, but that’s not going to stop us from gossiping about it. Here we go!

So, What’s the Scoop?

According to Insider Gaming, Eidos-Montréal is once again shopping around a new Deus Ex project to potential publishers. The studio is reportedly pitching a new take on the franchise that aims to expand its cyberpunk legacy. And here’s the kicker: the pitch is apparently strong, new direction, modern visuals, all the things that scream “we’re back, baby!” But the catch? No one’s bitten yet.

Multiple publishers have passed on it so far, citing the franchise’s “niche” appeal or concerns about market fit. Ouch. It’s like watching someone try to bring back your favorite show, only to be told it’s “not mainstream enough” by every network executive in existence.

The Ghost of Deus Ex Past

Let’s not forget that this isn’t the first time Deus Ex was given a second chance. A now-canceled sequel had been quietly in development for two years before Embracer Group pulled the plug earlier this year, leading to layoffs at Eidos-Montréal and a whole lot of disappointment. It was a grim reminder that just because we want something to exist doesn’t mean it will.

But the fact that Eidos is still pushing for it? That’s devotion. That’s passion. That’s someone in the dev room yelling, “I didn’t ask for this,” while building another augment.

What’s at Stake

For those new to the franchise (hi, welcome to emotional cyberpunk trauma), Deus Ex is a series built on espionage, transhumanism, and conspiracy theories that hit a little too close to home. You play as augmented operatives like Adam Jensen, caught between mega-corporations, political unrest, and their humanity, or lack thereof.

The series peaked critically with Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011, blending stealth-action gameplay with dialogue choices and RPG mechanics in a slick cyberpunk world. Mankind Divided followed in 2016 but didn’t quite stick the landing thanks to an abrupt ending and a story that felt like it was cut short, which, to be fair, it kind of was.

A new entry could finally deliver on those lingering story threads. Who doesn’t want closure for the golden-eyed, brooding, machine-man that is Adam Jensen?

Should We Believe the Hype?

Eh. That’s where it gets tricky.

The video game landscape has changed dramatically since the last Deus Ex. With Cyberpunk 2077 finding its footing and games like Starfield and The Callisto Protocol trying (and sometimes failing) to reinvent big-budget sci-fi, there’s real risk involved. Even for a franchise as beloved as this one.

But there’s also opportunity. If Eidos can modernize Deus Ex without losing its gritty philosophical edge, and if a publisher with vision (and deep pockets) steps in, the franchise could absolutely come back stronger. We’re in an era where narrative-driven RPGs are getting more love than ever. Baldur’s Gate 3, anyone?

Final Thoughts

Is Deus Ex coming back? Maybe. Should we let our hearts get too attached? Probably not. But if Eidos-Montréal can find the right partner and reframe their vision to hit the high notes we know the franchise is capable of, we might actually see a new chapter. Fingers crossed.

Until then, let’s continue doing what we always do. Keep hoping for another Deus Ex, but until I see in Eidos-Montréal’s writing that they’re doing all this, we’re not really going to hold our breath for anything substantial.
