Russo Brothers Express Interest In Adapting MCU Films To Video Games

Russo brothers interested in MCU video games

The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, have made a name for themselves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). They were the brains behind many of the best movies from the Infinity Saga. Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame were all helmed by the duo. Marvel Studios isn’t done with them yet. They have already signed on to direct the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars movies. In a recent interview, they also expressed interest in adapting their films to video games.

Movie tie-in games are mostly a thing of the past. Twenty years ago, every major film that was released had a video game tie-in as well. Most of them flopped, but there were some that fans loved. In the past few years, fans have made their desires known for the genre to come back. The Russo brothers are out promoting their new movie The Electric State and were asked by Variety about adapting their movies to video games. Joe Russo gave a surprising answer.

“We would definitely be open to it. Right now, what we’re doing is creating new IP. At AGBO, we want to tell new stories. We want to tell new stories with new characters and new worlds that people haven’t seen before. So Anthony and I and Donald are working together to build out new worlds.

And we have three that we’re currently working on that the intention is, for every world we build to have the scale and depth of a “Star Wars” universe, but in a different genre. And then we’ll build materials around those new worlds. We’ll tell stories in different ways using different media in those worlds.”

Obviously, nothing has been confirmed. There have been no announced plans to create video games based on the upcoming MCU movies. However, the fact that the directing duo is open to it is a promising start for video game fans.

Marvel Video Games

Marvel Rivals is currently sweeping the nation, but that isn’t a story-based game. Marvel’s Avengers largely failed to impress critics and fans, resulting in the live service being discontinued a few years down the road. However, the storyline was interesting. It introduced fans to new characters and forged a path away from the MCU. Fans don’t necessarily want a tie-in video game to be a complete rehash of the movie, but something they can interact with outside of the theater.

Another video game that had success was the Ultimate Alliance trilogy. These games featured RPG elements with a roster of heroes that would make Marvel Rivals jealous. Even with some fatigue with the genre, there is clearly still an appetite for video games based on Marvel superheroes.

Final Thoughts

This is something to keep an eye on. The Russo brothers may have simply been answering an interview question honestly, saying they would be open to the idea. I’m sure we are all open to ideas that we will never act on, and this may be just that. As the release dates for the next MCU blockbuster movies get closer, this will be something to keep an eye out for.
