In the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, Sage debuted as one of the main antagonists, specifically a deuteragonist, in 2022’s Sonic Frontiers. Created by Dr. Eggman, she’s an artificial intelligence and is regarded as one of Dr. Eggman’s most prized inventions. Initially, she started as Sonic’s enemy before developing a deep admiration for his abilities and friendships, adding to her complex character within the Sonic universe.
Sage’s Origins
After repeated failures from his previous robotic programs, Dr. Eggman would go on to create a more advanced artificial intelligence. As a result, Dr. Eggman created Sage with the purpose of hacking into an ancient civilization’s technology on the Starfall Islands to uncover their secrets. Although she warned Dr. Eggman about testing the alien technology, Dr. Eggman proceeded anyway by connecting her handheld unit to an old portal device. Unfortunately, her warnings turned into reality when she and Dr. Eggman found themselves trapped in a digital dimension called Cyber Space.
While there, Sage spent her time learning about the Starfall Islands, eventually uncovering a powerful entity known as The End. Considered a threat, the entity was locked away by four robot Titans to prevent the end of the world. To eliminate The End, she would use the seven Chaos Emeralds to power the ancient technology, resulting in her freedom from Cyber Space. However, Dr. Eggman remained trapped, leading her to figure out how to free him.
Sage’s Character in Sonic Frontiers
One way Sage tried to free Dr. Eggman from his entrapment was to try taking control of the Titans roaming the islands. Unfortunately, she could only influence their aggression and couldn’t fully dominate them. After a while, she’d encounter Knuckles the Echidna and view him as a potential threat, which drove her to summon the Titan, Asura, to destroy him. Consequently, the clash aided in Knuckles’ imprisonment on Ares Island.
In Sonic Frontiers, Sage tried to stop Sonic’s efforts to save his friends by deploying Starfall Island’s ancient robots. Namely, these robots included Wyvern, Knight, and Giganto, and even with their help, she was unable to stop Sonic from completing his mission. Further along in the game, The End would be freed from Cyber Space, resulting in Sonic working with Sage and Dr. Eggman to stop the threat by collecting the Chaos Emeralds. Although they succeeded at stopping The End, Sage sacrificed herself in the process, however, Dr. Eggman was able to bring her back to life as her program survived the fallout.
Evolution of Sage’s Personality
Due to her being artificial intelligence, Sage first appeared distant and emotionless at the start of the game. Although she has a stoic demeanor, it is apparent that her care for Dr. Eggman is genuine as she sees him as a father figure. Mainly, her two objectives were to rescue Dr. Eggman from Cyber Space and save the world from The End. Following her interactions with Sonic and his friends, she began evolving emotionally as the game progressed. In fact, she became more compassionate and heroic from observing Sonic’s friendships and receiving his Heart Tokens throughout the game. Not only that but watching Sonic’s determination to save his friends from danger led to Sage trusting him more.
Final Thoughts
By the end of the game, Sonic taught Sage the value of true friendship, leading her to become more open-minded rather than solely logical. What’s more? Her sacrifice to help Sonic stop The End from destroying the world was atonement for her early antagonisms in the game. With her gained empathy, she proved that she’s capable of love and loyalty by protecting her newfound relationships even despite being an artificial intelligence.
