Emio: All About Surprisingly Scary Nintendo Project

Nintendo just released a short and surprisingly spooky trailer for a project that is cloaked in heaps of mystery. Only titled “Emio”, the ominous teaser is only 15 seconds long, but it contains secrets that could be broken down if one tries hard enough. It was accompanied by a short hashtag and no other context. Here at Total Apex, we’ve taken the time to go frame-by-frame just to see what we can uncover. Here’s what we know so far about the unexplained and eerie Emio.

Emio: What We Know So Far

The primary subject of the 15-second Emio trailer is a person in a trench coat wearing a bag on their head. This bag features a face that looks to be drawn on with a marker or paint. For the most part, the face seems to be happy. However, when going frame-by-frame, this face turns sinister with sharp and jagged teeth. This brings a true horror feel to this unknown project, a stark difference to the majority of games Nintendo has its name on. The special effect that makes this trailer feel right out of an old roll of film helps create that unsettling feeling as well.

The Kanji featured for a few moments in the trailer doesn’t give much to work on either since the characters just translate to Emio. The word is actually a male Japanese that can mean either “Smiling Man or “Laughing Man.” It’s a name fitting for the unnerving character featured in the trailer, especially since the character has a joyful smile and a terrifying one.

The only description Nintendo gave us underneath the trailer itself is simply #WhoIsEmio. This hashtag is trending across Twitter with people around the world wondering what this project could possibly be about. Some are even jokingly calling for the character featured in the trailer to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, even with all the speculation, most Nintendo fans seem to be at a loss for what Emio truly is.

Emio Is Probably A Nintendo Switch Exclusive

Due to the trailer though, it does seem like it’s something that is coming to Nintendo Switch. With nothing else to go on, everyone will just have to wait and see what the company is brewing with Emio. Nintendo is very particular about how they reveal games, most commonly doing so at Nintendo Direct showcases. They just held one for the upcoming slate in June, but they curiously did not mention this project in any capacity.

That said, this still came as an out-of-nowhere announcement from Nintendo alone. If it was a game for widespread console access, it wouldn’t have been announced solely by the Japanese brand. Other platforms, like Xbox, PC or PlayStation, likely would have their own announcements as well.

That only adds to the mystery. Since it’s such a frightening teaser, it doesn’t fit with the overall Nintendo vibe. They don’t do games like Resident Evil, especially not as their own IP. This could be a huge disembarkment for the company as they shift towards a new console. They also debuted the Nintendo Switch Online N64 Mature games library at the Nintendo Direct, so perhaps they’re beginning to make more adult-centric games. Stay tuned to find out more as we uncover the true mystery of Emio and what this project could be.
