Second Massive Fallout 4 Update Released

A second huge Fallout 4 Update has been released. The game has seen a huge resurgence in popularity recently. With the show debuting in April and taking the world by storm, the most recent single-player game from the franchise has seen a massive uptick in players. This has forced the developers to turn back to it and make sure it’s running well.

It was originally released in 2015, which was before current or next-gen consoles were released. That means it was developed for the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 and not exactly optimized for the Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. However, the two updates that have released in the last month have fixed that. Here’s what the latest update from May 13 added to the game.

Frame Rate Target has been introduced for the title, allowing players to choose between 30, 40, and 60 frames per second. If they have a monitor or television that can handle better FPS, then this update allows them to find the right setting. Players can also choose between Visuals and Performance to strike a balance between how the game runs and how it looks on next-gen.

The game was not without bugs, even if it did release almost nine years ago. However, many of these issues have been patched:

  • Auto HDR is re-enabled
  • Fixed issue where reserved space was not displayed correctly in load order menu
  • Fixed issue with character name field when in widescreen
  • Fixed an issue that caused bundles to not fully download and could crash
  • Fixed an issue with material swaps
  • Fixed an issue that would break DLC until a restart after downloading mods
  • Fixed an issue that would crash if going back to the Main Menu with mods still downloading
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the Creation Club menu to disappear
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when connecting to the network after a suspend/resume with the network off

There was also an issue with art in Creations, but that has been patched as well.

Why Fallout 4 Has Become So Popular

The Fallout 4 update today is only happening because the game has seen a massive influx of players. The game has seen a 152.4% increase in players since April of 2024. That is when the television show came out. It was critically acclaimed and beloved by fans, and it allowed the franchise to reach an audience it hadn’t before.

This drove viewers to try to find a way into the games. With Xbox Game Pass, Fallout 4, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 3, and Fallout 76 are available. The former is the easiest way for players today to get into it for a variety of reasons. First, it wasn’t critically panned like Fallout 76 was. That is the newest game, but it had a myriad of issues and is a multi-player game rather than the traditional single-player model.

Second, it is newer and thus has better graphics and gameplay than New Vegas or 3 since it came out years later. As for the first two games in the franchise, they’re not even 3D and they’re not on Game Pass. That means players would have to try and buy them and old games can be both difficult to find and expensive to purchase. Fallout 4 was the perfect blend of everything, making it the go-to for players after the show.

Thanks to the television show, there is renewed interest in the game series. That very well could lead to Bethesda introducing another game down the line. In the meantime, gamers are flocking to Fallout 4 and the developers seem more than happy to go back and add updates to it to better everyone’s experience.
