The Sega Dreamcast is now officially 25 years old (in the United States anyway). In the U.S., the console was released on September 9, 1999. While it didn’t do too well thanks to competition caused by PlayStation 2 and other factors, fans of the console look back on it fondly. Both Sega and fans of the console took the time to celebrate the anniversary and remember the joy it brought them.
The Life of the Dreamcast
During the U.S. launch, the Dreamcast had 19 games available for those who were eager to get their hands on it. One of those games turned out to be the best-selling game made for the console, Sonic Adventure. It ended up selling 2.5 million copies. Other titles available to play on the Dreamcast’s launch include Soulcalibur, Mortal Kombat Gold, and Monaco Grand Prix. Throughout its lifespan, about 600 games were produced for the Dreamcast.
While the console carried a lot of big titles, they couldn’t keep the momentum going in the end. On December 31, 2001, Sega announced the Dreamcast would be discontinued. The tragedy was caused by several factors. The console happened to be launched in the U.S. around the same time as the PlayStation 2 being announced. Crowds of American gamers flocked to that system instead. A lack of third-party support from big names like EA and Squaresoft also caused big issues.
How Fans Are Celebrating
Despite the tragedy that befell the beloved console, fans still look back on it fondly. In fact, they took to social media to talk about their favorite Dreamcast games. These are memories full of joy and nostalgia that can seen from a metaphorical mile away. Some lucky few showed off the Dreamcasts that are still in their possession and are still going strong. For those who don’t have one, they can look to sites like eBay to look into purchasing one. Luckily enough, some are being sold currently for far less than current consoles.
To help with the celebration, those at Limited Run Games are selling some merch for those dedicated to remembering the Dreamcast’s life. Items included in the collection range from shirts to trading cards. The items are available for pre-order and are slated to be shipped sometime in March of this year. It’s the perfect kind of order to show dedication to a once-amazing console.
Looking Into Sega’s Future

While no more consoles seem to be in Sega’s future at the moment, the company still has exciting times ahead. First off, the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations is just around the corner. It will be released to much excitement on October 22. Sega is also in the process of remaking at least five classic titles. This was announced with a trailer during The Game Awards in 2023. The known games getting some new life are Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi.
Sega and its subsidiary Atlus are set to appear at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. While not much is known about what their booth or presentation will be like just yet, their presence just adds to the growing excitement. The Tokyo Game Show’s business days are September 26 and 27. It then opens up for the public for the second half of the convention.
Conclusion
While the lifespan of Dreamcast was short, it was so very sweet. It gave the lucky ones who experienced it memories to look back fondly on. From successful games like Sonic Adventure to odd games like Seaman, it had games for a broad audience to enjoy. One can only hope that the console will truly be revived or have a successor, but the future doesn’t look too great for that possibility. For now, the Dreamcast remains Sega’s last console to ever be released into the world.
