The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has always been the mascot for the gaming giant SEGA. Between its dozens of games, acclaimed films, and animated series, the blue speedster earned its place as a legendary gaming icon. However, one genre that has unexplored potential is the classic RPG. This is a shame, as a Sonic RPG would be a fantastic new direction for the franchise To many fans, the idea sounds downright unbelievable, given the basics of the Sonic franchise. However, the series’ story elements have given SEGA the building blocks to make the next hit JRPG. Here is a breakdown of why fans are due for a new Sonic RPG to redefine the franchise.
It Would Redeem the Series After Chronicles

SEGA needs to create a Sonic RPG first because it would redeem the idea after their previous attempt. In 2008, Sega commissioned a video game from Western developer BioWare, the creators of the acclaimed Dragon Age and Mass Effect series. Given their reputation, a Sonic RPG from them should have been a success. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood was released on the Nintendo DS. The game told a fairly unorthodox story for the franchise about aliens known as “The Marauders” trying to steal the Chaos Emeralds.
As for its gameplay, it gave a surprisingly unique take on turn-based combat by using rhythm events and special “POW Moves” with Sonic’s abilities. Despite the talent behind the game, The Dark Brotherhood was panned by critics across the board. They despised the game for its tedious gameplay loop and lackluster story. Sonic and his crew were clearly out of their element while in a JRPG. This was the first and last game in the “Chronicles” subseries, even though the game ended on a cliffhanger. Despite this, the game still attracted a small number of fans.
A Sonic RPG Would Broaden the Franchise
Despite the first attempt’s failure, SEGA would greatly benefit from releasing Sonic RPG. One of the biggest reasons is that it would broaden the range of the Sonic franchise. Sonic cemented himself as one of the largest mascots in gaming, serving as the mascot of a billion-dollar franchise. However, his games have mostly been high-speed action games. Creating a Sonic RPG could be an Avant-Garde experiment and add to the diversity of this massive portfolio.
Sonic Frontiers proved that the games can expand into vast open worlds for players to run across. As such, an RPG would be a great way to build the hero’s catalog. For another example, his longtime rival Mario has shown through the acclaimed Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series that one can make a good RPG even from a different original genre.
Furthermore, publisher SEGA has created many iconic role-playing games over the years, such as its subsidiary Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei franchise and the iconic Like A Dragon series, adding to its experience. Therefore, it has the tools needed to give the Sonic franchise an RPG worthy of the brand’s name. With all of these amazing titles in tow, SEGA has the tools needed to make a Sonic RPG work.
It Would Expand the Lore and Story
Finally, the biggest reason for introducing a Sonic RPG would be to expand the lore and story. For decades, the lore of Mobius has been retconned, expanded upon, and explored. Sonic has given players some genuinely astounding stories with Colors and Unleashed. However, the constantly shifting “gimmicks” for each title led to the series building a more fragmented story and central narrative.
With the new language of the RPG genre, there would be many opportunities to expand upon the world of Sonic. Leading an actual party would provide more time and space to develop characters and lead a real team of iconic heroes into battle. Furthermore, the world of Mobius has decades of worldbuilding behind it, so a story where players can take their time exploring it and doing lengthy side quests would be a great way to explore the setting.
