Sonic X Shadow Generations features an all-new campaign for everyone’s favorite anti-hero, Shadow the Hedgehog. The hype is real since we haven’t seen a Shadow-centric title since the 2005 aptly named, Shadow the Hedgehog. In this campaign, Shadow faces an enemy much bigger than Eggman called Black Doom. In order to gain his powers, Shadow must travel back in time and confront his dark past. Along the way, he’ll gain strength, making the battles to come easier with each stacking power.

The new campaign comes with several new abilities that are unique to Shadow. He can, of course, cast Chaos Control to stop time, a classic Shadow attack. He will also be able to surf on water and fly through the air using his newfound wings that we see in the trailer. It goes without saying though, that Shadow is not so much of an escape artist as he is a fighter. Sure, he’s fast like Sonic, but he tends to take a more hands-on approach. Let’s talk about how this game approaches combat.

A Dark New Way to Fight

Shadow has traded in his guns from 2005 for Doom-based attacks in 2024, a well-received decision by fans. Let’s go over them in detail. The first ability showcased in the trailer is Doom Spears. This attack allows Shadow to strike five enemies at once. This makes for great wave clear when making your way through a stage. The next ability is Doom Blast. This one looks really interesting, as it gives Shadow the power to launch his enemies into the air. This can be used to take out pesky grunts who stand in the way of your progress.

The third ability revealed in the trailer is Doom Morph, which is nothing short of bizarre but it looks incredibly fun. Reminiscent of something like Splatoon, Shadow morphs into a squid-like creature and swims along purple colored platforms within the stage. The footage also shows him using this ability to swing from place to place. Of course, there’s Doom Wing, which allows Shadow to fly and finally, Doom Surf, which lets him glide along water like a pro.

All of these abilities will play a part in the game’s main story, making for a fun variety of gameplay options and stages. SEGA really has stepped their game up for this one and fans are overjoyed to see Shadow back in a mainline Sonic game, especially as a main character. Sonic X Shadow Generations releases on October 25th and is available to pre-order now through Steam or via the game’s official website.
