The Last of Us is a video game series with a sequel, a prequel, and an HBO adaptation. Both Part I and Part II have won multiple gaming awards, including Game of the Year. It grew in popularity due to its fantastic storytelling and excellent graphics. It was released in 2013 by Naughty Dog, a studio known for creating iconic characters like Crash Bandicoot and Nate Drake. As of 2021, Neil Druckmann, the creative director for The Last of Us Part II, confirmed that he had an outline for Part III. The question is: does there need to be a third part, or is the story at its end?
The Ending of The Last of Us Part II
To earn a third part, there would need to be a missing feeling of finality in the second one. In The Last of Us Part II, the story seems to end with Ellie, Dina, and the recently born JJ living in a farmhouse, doing their best to find peace. This is difficult for Ellie as she has PTSD. However, this ending quickly shifts when Tommy gives Ellie the news of Abby and Lev’s whereabouts. This leads Ellie back on the path to revenge. She leaves Dina, who doesn’t want her to go, and begins her trek to Santa Barbara to avenge Joel. In the end, though, as she is about to take Abby’s life, she has a memory of Joel and lets Abby and Lev leave.
After her encounter with Abby, Ellie returns to the house. It is clear that there has been a time jump, as her wounds have healed, and her weapons are missing. She most likely stopped to visit Dina, possibly at the Jackson community, before visiting the house one last time. However, the game ends with Ellie wandering back into the woods, and that is the last players see of her.
What to Expect in a The Last of Us Part III
Part three of The Last of Us would most likely follow Abby and Lev as a duo. If Ellie is genuinely returning to Jackson to finally settle down with Dina and JJ, her adventure might be over. Abby and Lev, on the other hand, still have a cliffhanger. Players are unsure where the two ended up. A part three revolving around the pair could be an interesting playthrough that is reminiscent of Ellie and Joel in Part I.
Would a The Last Of Us Part III be successful?
If people want there to be another addition to the Last of Us, Naughty Dog Studio needs to know that it will be a success. The answer is pretty simple: it will be. Though fans were upset with how Joel died in the second part, a majority of the audience had a positive response to the game. The ending to Part II doesn’t give players a real end to the story. Every main character just vanishes into the distance. This game would come flying off shelves because there absolutely needs to be an ending to this incredible story.
