Cute Bite: A Halloween Delight of a Vampire Sim – Weekly Indie Spotlight
In Cute Bite, you are the servant of a centuries-old vampire. You do his bidding in exchange for him using his blood to keep you young forever. However, one day your overlord ends up dead, but all is not lost. You remember that your master locked his vampire daughter in her coffin many years ago for disobeying him. But there’s another problem. Upon reawakening the daughter, you realize that being without blood for so long caused her to revert into a childlike body and forget her old life.
Raise a Vampire in Cute Bite
Developed by Hanako Games, the maker of the Magical Diary series, Cute Bite is a stat-raising sim. Your vampire mistress must work at jobs to raise certain stats. Once she has a little money, she can also take private lessons with some eccentric tutors. However, jobs and classes also drain her energy, and if her energy gets too low, she’ll have to sleep in her coffin and use up precious time.
The gameplay is similar to Hanako Games’ insanely difficult royalty sim, Long Live the Queen. Thankfully, this game is much easier, though it is still possible to die. The jobs and classes you emphasize and the choices you make during the story determine which ending you’ll get, and there are over twenty endings to obtain. Your vampire mistress might pursue a career, discover her origins, or set out to conquer the world. You can play over and over in search of all the endings.
Hunt for Victims!
Sleeping in the coffin isn’t the only way to regain energy. After a certain point in the game, the vampire girl can go hunting for blood, facing off against different victims in RPG-style turn-based battle. She gets stronger as she conquers more victims, which gives her a better chance against stronger foes. However, this also gets the attention of vampire hunters, so you need to consider risk versus reward.
If you raise your social stats high enough, you can also attend masquerade balls for a subtler way to restore your energy. At balls, you can kiss guests’ hands as you socialize with them, sneaking a tiny bite in the process. Raising certain other stats will open up the option to burgle houses, which can earn you money and other rewards. All this variety means that the game doesn’t get stale.
Conclusion
Cute Bite is one of those games that ends up being much more fun than you think it will be. The vampire daughter is a super-charming character, making it a delight to guide her adventure. The game also perfectly captures the spooky, macabre vibe that we all love at Halloween. If you like sim games and you’re interested in something quirkier than the usual Halloween outings, give Cute Bite a look. It can be purchased on Steam for $14.99.
