Sociable Soccer 24 Review: A Solid Sports Simulator

Sociable Soccer 24 was just released recently on Switch and Steam. The soccer game is exactly what what the name might suggest, a sociable simulation of soccer. In a world dominated by FIFA and Madden, there just aren’t that many alternatives. This is one of them, and it fits right into a niche platform that needs it.

Sociable Soccer 24 comes from Jon Hare, the longtime designer of this series. Hare sought to bring an arcade-style simplicity to a game genre that has been obsessed with hyper-realism lately. A copy of the game was provided to Total Apex Gaming by Team Overload PR, and we got the chance to check out the game. Here are our thoughts.

Pros for Sociable Soccer 24

The title is very simple. That’s a pro. Where FC 24 and its previous releases are in-depth, detailed, and exceptionally realistic, Sociable Soccer 24 isn’t. That makes it instantly stand out and even makes it unique in the grand scheme of sports simulation games. There are quite a few games like Madden, FC, NBA 2K, and others. There aren’t nearly as many like this game.

We got the chance to check out the Nintendo Switch version, which is a fantastic platform for this game to go on. The Switch doesn’t even have Madden, and it’s no secret that its version of FC 24 is far from optimized. It’s just not that powerful of a console, so a smaller, simpler game with cartoonish graphics beats the realism (and price tag) of FC 24 for Switch every day of the week.

Cons for Sociable Soccer 24

The game is not perfect. Very few games are. What this suffers from is being too much like FIFA Ultimate Team without the best parts. Players can choose any club to run as the manager, but they can earn new player cards to bring into their lineup. This allows them to make a creative lineup, but the ability to find the players you want or like is very difficult.

Additionally, while it is still very casual compared to FUT, that’s all there is to it. There are a few game modes to play within this style, which is a positive. However, it would benefit from allowing different types of play. Arcade-style sports simulators don’t have to be one-note. Just look at the Super Mega Baseball franchise for a good example.

All in all, this is a simple, fun game that can give Switch players a more streamlined and accessible soccer game. For that, it’s a win. And at the price point of $24.99 on Steam and Switch, it’s hard to beat. When sports video games continually get more expensive and feel as soulless as ever, this is a game, albeit a very small one, that has some creativity and an unbeatable price tag.
