Todd expressed the excitement he had for his role as Venom in an interview he participated in an IGN interview with Akeem Lawanson in 2023. When asked about his role stacked up with his other video game roles, Todd said Venom was one of his favorite characters he did at that time. As a self-proclaimed comic book nerd and gamer, he wanted to take on the role of one of Spider-Man’s most infamous foes to the best of his abilities. He said, “I don’t want to mess nothing up. I want it to be legendary, and hopefully, time will tell.”

The power that Todd brought to the character wasn’t out of just talent. He said that it was a combination of comic book research and just having fun with the character. In doing this, Todd made this rendition of Venom his own, which helped make the entire game a favorite for many in 2023. He helped create the strong story that fans of the game love. One of the final questions that Lawanson asked Todd in the interview was about whether Candyman or Venom would win in a fight with each other. Todd said the two characters would mostly show each other mutual respect.

Insomniac’s Response

In the wake of Todd’s passing, those who worked closely with him are sharing their condolences and grief online. This includes Insomniac Games, the studio that developed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. In a statement shared on social media, Insomniac Games stated in part, “He brought so much joy to our studio during the production of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and to many fans around the world with his inimitable voice and presence. We are Venom…forever.”

His Other Video Game Roles

While Todd’s role in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was one of his largest video game roles, it wasn’t his only one. Todd voiced Admiral Tommy Briggs in Call of Duty Black Ops II, which was released back in 2012. Even further back than that, he voiced the Vortigaunts in Valve’s Half-Life 2: Episode Episode Two. Vortigaunts are an intelligent race of aliens in the series. Todd reprised that role in 2020 with Half-Life: Alyx, the VR prequel to Half-Life 2. Todd also had a presence in multiple Star Trek games, which include characters in Star Trek: Elite Force II, The Next Generation: Klingon Honor Guard, and Online.

A Legacy That Will Live On

Within the worlds of movies, television, animation, and video games, Tony Todd is an icon who will live on for many decades to come. His voice and presence brought life and substance to his roles in a way that can hardly be recreated. In the video game industry, his role as Venom will be legendary, just like he said he wanted. The same can be said for the many roles his fans had the pleasure of watching and hearing him take on.
