Spider-Man Web of Shadows Deserves a Remaster

Web of Shadows

Few games have garnered a cult following like Shaba Games’ 2008 licensed game, Spider-Man Web of Shadows. This game is incredibly underrated. It came out in a very different video game ecosystem. Developers were chasing trends like player-controlled morality, zombies, and edgy, mature themes. Web of Shadows for better, or worse, has all of these elements present. While this game has some problems, it desperately deserves a modern remaster.

Web of Shadows’ Crazy Plot

This guy is just that. Crazy. The plot is pretty much “What if Venom infected all of New York?” Venom, one of Spidey’s most famous villains, replicates his symbiote. In Web of Shadows, Spidey gets one, and soon, everyone does. This applies to all characters, both villains and heroes alike. The craziest part of this game is just the scale and spectacle. It starts at the street level, with thugs and gangsters. Pretty simple enough. The game then evolves to supervillains being the main threat.

Then, symbiote-infected supervillains. Web of Shadows pits you against many Spidey villains in their normal forms, then in amped-up symbiote versions. It’s incredible. And not just the supervillains. Some of the heroes that show up here are venom-ized as well. You don’t get to fight all of them, but the stand out is the boss fight against symbiote Wolverine. Talk about a Marvel fan’s dream fight. This game also had good and bad choices to make that changed the story so that already unlocked a ton of replayability for the game.

Spidey’s Best Combat Ever

The two most important parts of a Spider-Man game are arguably the swinging and combat. Web of Shadows nails both of these flawlessly. The combat is just incredible. Web of Shadows introduced the web-strike feature, which became a mainstay in other Spidey games that weren’t even made by Shaba. This lets Spidey web himself onto an enemy and grab them, kick them, or perform a combo on them. It’s great, and super satisfying to pull off. Just like the strings of combos in Spidey’s arsenal.

His arsenal also includes his symbiote suit. Spidey can change into either his red or black suit whenever he wants, and both have different move sets. The red suit is super acrobatic and focuses on using web-based attacks for crowd control. The black suit is just raw power. Spidey attacks with tendrils and raw, visceral punches in between beatdowns. It’s honestly addicting to beat the snot out of the enemies in these games. And on top of it all, the web swinging is simple, yet complex once you get deeper into it. It’s perfect from a gameplay standpoint.

A Perfect Disaster

This game is far from perfect, however. There are tons of problems with it. The story is quite goofy and all over the place as mentioned earlier. In good ways, but also some bad ways. This game can be pretty janky. It lacks a lot of polish. There are some times when characters or enemies will just spawn out of the world, or there might be a visual glitch here and there. The web swinging can make Spidey move so fast that the game will straight up stop the player from moving randomly.

Yes, it is very rough around the edges. The latter half of the game is designed quite poorly. There are tons of escort missions and “defend the point” levels. It gets quite repetitive. It’s unfortunate because the combat of this game is incredible. The level design could be a lot better. But that still doesn’t ruin it. Web of Shadows is such an underrated game. It deserves a modern remaster on current consoles. It would sell really well, on the gameplay and premise alone.
