Star Fox is one of the most recognizable characters in video games. Since his debut in 1993, he and his pilot friends have been a favorite among many gamers. With the Nintendo Switch 2 being announced, the rumor mills have started swirling on possible games that will also be released. Naturally, many hope for a new installment in the series, but the studio has successfully ported its existing titles to its new consoles. Legendary Nintendo artist Takaya Imamura thinks one underrated game in the series, Star Fox: Assault, should make an appearance on the new console and shared his thoughts on social media.
Nintendo Artist Wants Star Fox: Assault On Switch 2
Imamura posted on X his desire to see a project he worked on get some more love. Other titles from the series have been ported into new consoles. However, Star Fox: Assault is still solely a GameCube title. It was released in 2005 and received mostly positive reviews from fans. Unlike many games in the series that only have gameplay in an Arwing spacecraft, this game allows players to get in the seat of a Landmaster tank and even play some levels on foot.
On some levels, players can even hop in between flying and being on foot. There are a number of weapons players can acquire, as well as special items that can help players defeat enemies. Additionally, the game featured a multiplayer mode where players can battle with their friends. Imamura expressed he wants to see this game on the next-gen console. Because it has only been on one console, many fans forget about it when talking about Star Fox games.
Is A New Game Coming, Too?
While it would be awesome to get a port of Star Fox: Assault, fans have also been clamoring for another installment in the series. The last game to hit shelves was in 2016, and it was a Wii U title that was met with mixed reviews. However, according to one leaker, a new title is in the works and could be released in the next 12 months. Obviously, this is a rumor but it makes sense that Nintendo would want to lean into their well-known franchises for a new console.
There is also a ton the studio could do with the gameplay. Gamers love the dogfight-style combat, and Nintendo could build an experience that has not yet been seen in a Star Fox title. While many of their characters have a long list of titles, this one does not. If they could figure out how to harness the popularity of this series, they could have a huge hit on their hands. This is one of the many rumors we will be keeping an eye on as we get more information on the release of the Switch 2.
Final Thoughts
Nintendo reportedly was working on a television series for Star Fox and his friends, but it was scrapped. I’m curious whether they were hoping the series would help keep fans engaged and give them time to make another high-quality game. Regardless, many fans hope to hear some news on the series soon.
