State of Play 2024: Ghost of Yotei Revealed

State of Play releases its reveal trailer for Ghost of Yotei from Sucker Punch Studio. A seemingly, sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, or even… a sister.

We will cover the trailer and break it down covering what was shown, lets dive into it!

The State of Play trailer opens up with a Japanese man, possibly a Ronin himself introducing the scenario of the trailer. Being “beyond the edge of Japan,” we are near Mount Yotei in 1603. 329 years after Ghost of Tsushima and Jin Sakai. The man continues by saying how at the edge, people go there to disappear but how the new protagonist is there to hunt, all the while there is a bloody wolf on the screen signifying the Ronin bloody from already being on their hunt.

After he rises claiming Ronin is after the protag, it cuts to the feminine Ronin wearing an Oni mask, with a Shamisen on their back and a damaged hat on their head. The screen turns black and we can hear the man being cut down. The protag Ronin sheathing their blade and riding off on a white horse.

The trailer then drops Sucker Punch‘s logo and beings picking up the pace with a pick-up to its music showcasing the environment of Ghost of Yotei,  if you have played Ghost of Tsushima, you will be happy to know it lived up to its beautiful environments the complimented Japan’s landscapes and rich history. This game looks like it will be no different.

It flashes by landscapes transformed by seasons going from green fields, yellow flowers, fallen red leaves and turning plants, and even snow-white covered fields grasping the sense of its beauty along with the sense of the instruments being played, it captures 16th Japan perfectly and the welcome that Ghost of Tsushima gave players when its first trailer dropped. The same world but a new century and a new game in Ghost of Yotei.

We get a better look at the characters as their instrument of choice is displayed on their backs and walking through fields with structures of Japan in the background from towers n the back of the empty and lush fields to a lone santurary in the middle of a place to worship.  And their choice of clothes. A few scenes show the protag getting ready for a duel with both Ronin and Shoguns alike. If they are a hunter, then this shows they have no specific target, maybe it’s a code of sorts that makes them choose who they hunt down.

Continuing in the Ghost of Yotei trailer, we get a closer look at the protagonist as she has a stare-down with an irritated wolf. However, once the Ronin put their blades down, the wolf stopped as well, maybe showing what aspects we can expect from the Ronin, as Jin was friends with foxes, maybe this new Ronin will be friends with wolves. It would make sense to compare them to their animals, as Jin was sly and adaptive as a fox, this symbolism shows this Ronin as a hunter and a lone wolf. The Ronin does wield a Katana and, what looks to be, a Wakizashi. The Ronin does seem to be more in favor of duel-wielding their blades.

As the Trailer ends we see the Ronin using various weapons from the sickle and chain weapon, Kusarigama to a Flintlock Rifle, showcasing they use whatever they can to ensure the job gets done and then reveals 2025, the year of release for PlayStation, meaning 2026 for us PC players, hopefully sooner if anything.

Closing Thoughts

If predictions for Ghost of Yotei are anything we will probably see more of flintlock weapons being tossed around as we enter the Sengoku period of Japan. One of Japans most crucial moments where there were several civil wars and social wars. If the Ronin isn’t hunting for themselves, maybe a Lord of sorts. We will have to wait for more info going forward.

You could make a comparison to a Death the Pale Rider, from Christian lore as Death rides upon a White Steed in the time of Revelations. If the Ronin is hunting, they could only to kill and that makes them all the more dangerous.

While it didn’t show much, it was an eye-catching trailer that I know a lot of people will be excited to get their hands on. Of course, PC players having to wait for a year after release to play is sad but anyone who has even touched Ghost of Tsushima will be excited nevertheless. I am excited and extremely jealous but happy regardless for another beautiful game in the series. If you haven’t at least touched Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, I would recommend it, and at least we will have Assassin’s Creed Shadows to hold us over, as for PlayStation, lucky you guys!
