From the depths of the oceans rose Subnautica 2. This sequel seemingly came out of the blue, but with development progressing quickly, this new title will be released sometime in early 2025. The Subnautica franchise, consisting of Subnautica, Subnautica: Below Zero, and now Subnautica 2, is a series of underwater, story-driven exploration games. Subnautica opens with the player waking up, lucky to be alive after crash landing onto the oceanic planet. From encountering unfamiliar marine life to building bases with oceanic materials, Subnautica has charmed millions of fans- and potentially horrified them.
What Is Subnautica?
In this action-adventure video game, you survive a hostile ocean environment and find a way to cure your infection. Subnautica is an underwater survival game set on an alien planet named Planet 4546B. The wiki states that this planet “is an ocean planet and is said to be smaller than Earth with a breathable oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere.” The infection you are fighting, the Kharaa Bacterium, broke out on this planet around 1000 years ago. The disease decimated the creatures living on this planet and left them either dead or deformed. To this day, around 5% of the creatures on Planet 4546B are infected with Kharaa.
The planet in Subnautica is full of unique, biodiverse ecosystems. There are three major zones on Planet 4546B: the Crater, Dead Zone, and Sector Zero. The Crater is where most of Subnautica’s gameplay happens. The Dead Zone is a deep expanse of nothingness where only a few organisms and Leviathan-class creatures can live. Sector Zero is an arctic area of Planet 4546B where Subnautica: Below Zero is set. This game was intended to be DLC (downloadable content) for Subnautica, however, it was too big to be a base game expansion. Subnautica: Below Zero is not to be confused with Subnautica 2, as the latter title will bring a whole new planet and organisms.
Subnautica is a first-person, open-world experience. In the game, you play as Ryley Robinson who has just crashed onto Planet 4546B. Your objective is to explore the ocean and find a way to cure your Kharaa infection. Players collect materials to craft blueprints found around the map and build bases. Some blueprints include submarines and weapons, which are useful in defending against predatory marine life. You must also keep track of your hunger, thirst, and oxygen in Subnautica to keep your character alive. Subnautica has a staggering 96% approval rating on Steam and is beloved by millions across the globe.
Subnautica 2 Now In Development
This sequel game is currently under development in Unreal Engine 5. With the new graphics engine, Subnautica 2 will be more gorgeous than ever. Subnautica 2 is being produced by the game development studio Unknown Worlds Entertainment. Over the past months, images have been shared by the development team showing progress on the new title. Subnautica 2’s visuals are massively overhauled with new lighting, shading, and water physics. Never-before-seen creatures also made their debut in these images. Not much is known about the gameplay, but it is safe to assume it will be similar to its predecessor.
Early Access Will Arrive In 2025
Rumors spread within the community that Subnautica 2 will be released in early access in late 2024. However, Unknown Worlds posted a statement denying this claim. More teasers and information will be shared in the following months, but the game itself is set to release sometime in early 2025. It will have a multiplayer option not seen before in the franchise, supporting 2-4 players. Subnautica 2 will be a live service game, however, there will be no typical live service monetization practices like battle passes, subscriptions, or season passes. Subnautica 2 is looking very promising so far, and the community is more hyped than ever.
