Super Mario Sunshine Needs a Sequel in 2024

Super Mario Sunshine

Over the years, platforming icon Mario has starred in many acclaimed titles in his battles against Bowser. However, now and then, he needs a proper vacation to let off some steam. In 2003, Nintendo gave gamers one of the more well-remembered titles from the franchise, Super Mario Sunshine, for the GameCube. Two decades later, fans fondly remember the game for its unique gameplay and additions to the Mario saga. Furthermore, it is high time that this classic aquatic platformer receives a sequel. Here is a breakdown of why Super Mario Sunshine needs to return to our consoles with a sequel.

The Original Super Mario Sunshine

For those unaware, Super Mario Sunshine was a 2003 title released by Nintendo for the GameCube. The story follows Mario and Princess Peach on a vacation gone awry. Mario is framed for vandalizing the city and must join forces with the robot backpack F.L.U.D.D. to clear his name. The game was the second 3D Mario game after Super Mario 64, which practically invented the 3D platformer genre.

Sunshine’s central “gimmick” is Mario’s use of F.L.U.D.D.’s hydro-cannons to maneuver areas, blast enemies, and clean up sludge. In many ways, the game can be considered a companion to Luigi’s Mansion. Both series follow one of the brothers in a new setting and use a mechanical backpack for the central gameplay (in fact, Professor E. Gadd designed both in the lore!) Despite the game’s initial success, Nintendo never gave the game a proper re-release. The closest thing fans got was the short-lived Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which fans strongly criticized as an example of artificial scarcity. While an official re-release would be greatly appreciated, a sequel would be a better tribute to the saga.

The Game Needs to Return

Given the game’s stellar reputation, Nintendo would be wise to create a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine. The first reason is that nostalgic fans would certainly support a new Sunshine game. Since its release, the game cemented itself as a timeless game. Because of this, a return for F.L.U.D.D. and the rest of the game’s cast would be an automatic success for Nintendo. Next, Nintendo has proven its ability to make a good sequel to a classic game, no matter how long ago it was. Take the aforementioned game Luigi’s Mansionwhich received two fantastic sequels released a decade apart.

As such, the creators should have no trouble writing a return to the island. The creators would have the whole ocean to explore for new ideas. One of the biggest reasons Super Mario Sunshine needs to return is the arrival of the Nintendo Switch’s successor. For several years, Nintendo teased that they would unveil a worthy successor to their latest, best-selling console. With the device’s eventual arrival, the company must spare no expense in giving it a proper library of classic titles.

How to Improve a Sequel

After two decades since the game’s release, there are many ways that a continuation could build upon the original. Firstly, technology has vastly improved since the days of the Nintendo GameCube, especially in fluid mechanics and physics. Because of this, a new Sunshine game could bring the original game’s central mechanic to its full potential using the power of modern gaming. Furthermore, Isle Delfino would be breathtaking with modern graphics.

One game to learn from would be Super Mario Galaxy 2. While the game was well-received, fans saw it as little more than an expansion pack that did not add much to the core game. If another Sunshine game were to avoid the pitfalls of that game, it should add and change enough to stand on its own. For example, a successor to F.L.U.D.D. could give him a new array of unique abilities to wash away foes.

Finally, the game could use a better story driving the adventure. The original game’s story about a summer vacation gone awry was fine as a low-stakes adventure. Still, it lacked the same gravity as games like Galaxy and Super Paper Mario, so room for improvement remains. Ultimately, releasing a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine would allow Nintendo to prove its loyalty and ingenuity to its fanbase.
