Super Mario Wonder Sales: How Well Did This Creative Game Do in 2023?

When I say the name Nintendo, what character immediately comes to your mind? For most, it’s probably the loveable plumber in red overalls named Mario. Last year, Nintendo released a new platform scroller for this iconic character with a few new elements to add to the roster. It was a smash hit with fans and critics alike.

Super Mario Wonder is a fresh new idea for the series and is meant to be a thrilling romp through the fields of the Flower Kingdom for old and new fans alike. With a new powerup called the Wonder Flower, you can now do things you never imagined until now. Want to turn into an elephant? A sentient pile of goo? Drill into the core of the earth? Now you can!

All Ideas are Welcome!

While researching this article, I found an interview with Nintendo’s heads. They said one of the ideas was for everyone in the company to write down an idea for a new power for the gang and put it on a sticky note for the director to see. That means anyone, from the intern to the composer of the music, could write down some ideas, and everyone had the option to pitch an idea.

Ultimately, that is a lot of ideas to go through, so of course, they had to cut some ideas that wouldn’t work. The main mechanic of these special abilities is that they had to have some buildup to where they would see how difficult the level was without something, and then there would be some musical cue to trigger a unique cutscene and let the fun begin.

Wait, How Many Copies Did You Say We Needed?!

This game was a massive success, sales-wise. By December 31st, 2023, nearly 12 million units had been sold. Yes, you read that right. 12 MILLION, M for Mario. That means that the total revenue was about $9.6 billion. BILLION, B for Bowser. These are insane numbers for a game, so it is doing really well. That’s not even counting the sales from 2024, which have generated a lot more revenue for the company. I think it’s safe to say that Super Mario Wonder sales rival those of Nintendo’s best games.

Who Is Playing Super Mario Wonder?

One look at YouTube reveals that many Nintendo fans have played this game. After a long adventure through Hyrule with Tears of the Kingdom, the Game Grumps, Dan and Arin, could rest easy with their playthrough. The game is much more relaxed, while still providing intense fun! They were able to, like many others, contribute to the Super Mario Wonder sales that took off.

Their playthrough has the normal hijinks you might expect from this duo, like Dan being able to steal a superpower that Arin wanted or him running ahead in a level before Arin could process something. Everything has to be a competition with these guys, and I love to see the chaos unfold.
