Surprising 2024 League of Legends Patch Details Revealed

The latest League of Legends patch is coming soon, and it is expected to be a rather significant one. With just about a week to go before the next scheduled League of Legends patch, major details of what to expect have been revealed in a tweet from Matt Leung-Harrison, LOL’s lead gameplay designer. Here’s what we know about the impending update.

Patch Will Nerf AP Junglers

In his post on X, Leung-Harrison said that some of the off-tank ability power junglers are not seeing the effects of previous nerfs due to the monster damage on the burn being unchanged. He said this is particularly true to Udyr, Zac, and Amumu.  “It’s a noticeable spike in clear speed upon finishing Liandrys and while Liandrys looks good for non-junglers, it’s over the line for these types of champions specifically and is being brought down,” Leung-Harrison said.

Other Item System Changes

Leung-Harrison said the development team has taken a hard look at the game’s item systems and determined that some of the systemic effects powering Stormsurge are “over the line.” “We’re looking to keep these burst items mostly power neutral, but distribute power away from the upfront damage procs,” the designer said.

The patch will also address what Leung-Harrison calls “unclear signaling” on which items players are meant to buy and difficulties in balancing across many different audiences. The designer said some of the players are more savvy about purchases while other simply blindly follow the item builds.  Attack Damage is also getting an update in the patch. “For AD items, we’re moving IE clearly out of the first and second item space by increasing the Gold cost gap to other lower-cost AD Crit options like Yun Tal, Essence Reaver, and Collector,” he said.

Eclipse and Collector User Changes

The patch will compensate and tune Eclipse users like Lee, Pantheon, and Riven around the current of Eclipse. Leung-Harrison said this will be seen mostly as straightforward buffs, with Pantheon buffs skewed towards the top lane with hit point levers.

The Collector is receiving a net buff, Leung-Harrison notes that the champions received a bigger hit than what it is being compensated for. As a result, buffs are being applied to Cait and Aphelios with this patch. “We also know that this will be a relative buff to Jhin for normal play as Shiv is being nerfed and Collector is being buffed, so we’re putting in a small compensation to Jhin who, even prior to this patch, was creeping up to be one of the top champions in the role,” he said.

Melee Crit Gets Adjustment

Leung-Harrison said for Yone, Yasuo, and Trynd, some of their items were nerfed pretty hard, especially for regular play, and even on the previous patch, Wind bros were frequently opting out of Crit. “The item system for melee crit users doesn’t feel great currently and needs follow-up, but in the meantime, giving them a bit of a power injection to tide them over until we do this work,” he said.

Poppy and Skarner Tapped Down

Poppy and Skarner have been receiving a lot of attention recently, particularly in Pro play, and will see their powers tapped down with the 14.20 patch. “Poppy in particular has really caught on in support and jungle due to a few enthusiasts and her damage values, especially with Bloodsong are feeling over the line,” Leung-Harrison said.

More Tap Downs Coming

Leung-Harrison said the League of Legends patch will also doll out some generic tapdowns to Mundo, Morde, Shyv, Singed, Udyr, and Veigar.  The designer revealed that these champions have either benefitted from not being as easy to burst after everyone deals less damage, making it much easier to execute their gameplan, or from not being as able to die as easily and getting to scale for free.
