Why the Switch Needs a 2024 Wind Waker Port

LoZ Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most remarkable fantasy series in all gaming. In 2003, Nintendo released one of the most beloved entries in the Legend of Zelda series, The Wind Waker, on the GameCube. Fans praised the game for its sense of exploration and gorgeous artwork. To this day, the game remains one of the most acclaimed titles from the iconic series.

Despite the game’s legacy, Nintendo has not seized the chance to release the game on the Switch. This isn’t very reassuring, given the company’s usual devotion to preserving their library of older games. Today’s Zeldafans deserve a chance to experience the game. Here is a breakdown of why The Wind Waker needs a version for the Switch.

The first reason Nintendo should port Wind Waker to the Switch is that the game is one of the most beloved from the Zelda series. The game tells the story of Link as he searches for his kidnapped sister across a flooded Hyrule. Along the way, he joins a band of pirates and his ship, the noble King of Red Lions. The vast ocean of the game became one of the best open worlds in gaming for its vast size and endless hidden secrets.

One of the game’s most acclaimed aspects was its cel-shaded art style, which shaded 3D models with 2D artwork. This gave the game a lighthearted, cartoonish aesthetic. The game stands alongside Okami as one of the most widely praised examples of this style in gaming. As for the game’s story, gamers praised the game for creating a unique branch on the timeline and giving a more nuanced version of the main antagonist, Ganondorf. The game was so successful that it inspired two other successors, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, on the Nintendo DS. Because of the game’s reputation, it deserves to be played by the next generation of Zelda fans.

It Would Build the Switch’s Library

The next reason porting The Wind Waker to the Switch would be a good idea is that it would build upon the Switch’s already impressive library. While Nintendo has always prided itself on its powerful consoles, such as the foundational NES, they’ve especially invested in the Switch. As a portable device with the capabilities of a major console, the Switch became one of the company’s most successful devices.

Furthermore, Nintendo took great pains to give it an equally impressive library. In addition to originals such as Three Houses and the colossal Smash Ultimate, Nintendo also filled its online store with archived games. Many Zelda titles, from the original NES classic to the remastered Skyward Sword, filled Nintendo’s digital storefront. Take Ocarina of Time, a similar example from the same franchise. For a long time, critics across the web heralded it as the greatest video game of all time, and Nintendo capitalized on that fact. Over the years, the game has had versions for GameCube, 3Ds, Wii U, and Switch. Therefore, bringing The Wind Waker to the Switch is the obvious choice.

It Would Help with Game Preservation

Finally, the biggest benefit of bringing Wind Waker to the Nintendo Switch would be its help preserving older titles. Despite the acclaim behind the game, the GameCube has long since been discontinued. While Nintendo created a well-received remaster for the Wii U, the console sold poorly and was labeled the black sheep of Nintendo’s lineup. Therefore, the game deserves a second chance on a new console.

One glaring example from Nintendo would be the infamous 3D All-Stars collection released in 2020. Despite the success of releasing three of their most iconic Mario titles, Nintendo deliberately pulled it from the market in a widely criticized case of artificial scarcity. Hopefully, executives will learn from this story if they ever seek to bring Wind Waker to the Switch. In the modern age, preserving older games has become an initiative among the gaming community. While Steam and the Epic Games store became vital, many other games from companies’ libraries, even critically acclaimed ones, are trapped on long-discontinued consoles. Wind Waker is just one of many games that could use a quick, easy port to a modern console.
