Tails the Fox has been one of Sonic’s best and most useful allies for a very long time. Tails’ real name is Miles Prower, a play on words based on how fast he can fly. Tails is simply a nickname based on the fact that he has two tails on his back that help him fly. However, no one calls him Miles at all, and many players might not have known that his real name wasn’t Tails. Since 1992, gamers have enjoyed playing with Tails even if they wouldn’t know who Miles Prower truly was.
Tails was first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. This classic game was just the second-ever title in the franchise, so there was just one entry prior to the fox’s creation. The character was designed by Yasushi Yamaguchi (classic design), who created the character, and Yuji Uekawa (modern design). The two tails are part of a genetic abnormality, but it also fits the theme of Sonic taking animals and tweaking them slightly (i.e. hedgehogs, cats, alligators).
