Report: Tears of the Kingdom is Top in 3 States

Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom remains one of the most popular games to come out recently. Not counting digital sales, it was the fifth-most bought among all video games purchased in 2023. That is in spite of it being up against all games and its exclusivity to the Nintendo Switch. It was a massive title for Nintendo, and so many players loved the eventual award-winner. A new report suggests that out of every single possible video game, it ranked first in three states.

Tears of the Kingdom Comes Out on Top in 3 States

There are a lot of video games out there, including some that aren’t console-exclusive, single-player, story-driven titles. Those tend to be a little less popular, which is evidenced by the fact that Madden 24 was the third-most-bought game last year. Minecraft ranked 20th on that list as well. Tears of the Kingdom, despite those factors, was recently ranked as the most popular video game by Statista in three states: Utah, Oregon, and Washington. This isn’t totally surprising as Nintendo of America is based in Seattle, Washington,  but it is impressive given the competition.

In 24 states (the majority), Fortnite was the favorite. In 22, it was Minecraft. The only other game to even get a single state was the Zelda title from last year. These games are designed to have lengthy shelf lives (one came out in 2011 and the other in 2017) and have multi-player options. The fact that Tears of the Kingdom outdid those games is a feat worthy of praise. The report from Tennessee indicated that TOTK ended up as the state’s fourth-most popular game behind Fortnite, Minecraft, and League of Legends. One of those is certainly not like the other. Other states likely have similar ranks, where Zelda ended up somewhere high on the list, too.

Zelda Remains a Popular Franchise

Many Zelda fans are gearing up for Echoes of Wisdomwhich figures to be a pretty massive launch as well. It’s easy to forget since most Nintendo titles are big, but The Legend of Zelda is a massive franchise. With 20 mainline titles (since Echoes isn’t out yet), the franchise has sold 153 million copies all-time. That’s only less than Super Mario, Resident Evil, Sonic the Hedgehog, Final Fantasy, Assassin’s Creed, The Sims, Minecraft, FIFA, Grand Theft Auto, Tetris, Call of Duty, and Pokemon. The popularity has only grown since 2017’s Breath of the Wild reintroduced the franchise to the mainstream.

In Conclusion

Given that Echoes of Wisdom is only releasing with just over four months left in the year, it’s hard to imagine it landing on any lists like the one above. However, Tears of the Kingdom landing as a top game in three states is a reminder of how popular these games can be. Everyone played (and seemed to love) Tears of the Kingdom. Whether or not its successor has the same success or not remains to be seen, but with the ever-growing slate of prominent video games, this is an impressive win for the franchise as a whole.
