Xbox Handheld Console Delayed as Microsoft Shifts Focus to Other Priorities

Microsoft had previously announced plans for an Xbox handheld device, one that was expected to be released within the next couple of years, with rumors of a release in conjunction with a next-generation Xbox console. It appears, though, that Microsoft is shifting its priorities. With both Nintendo coming out with the Switch 2 and Sony PlayStation announcing a future return of their own powerful handheld, Microsoft may be hedging its bets in an increasingly competitive space. Microsoft execs have decided the more immediate concern is supporting third-party devices using Windows 11 and/or Xbox branding.

When Microsoft announced they were working on an Xbox handheld device of its own, the excitement was palpable. With the success of Nintendo Switch, it was only a matter of time until other gaming behemoths tried to enter the space. PC gaming had also shifted to handheld opportunities, and Microsoft had been offering support for many of them. However, excitement started to cool when a rumored Sony PlayStation handheld came to light, with specs that were set to absolutely blow away the rest of the console competition. Microsoft appears to be backing away from the wars a bit, supporting the third-party handhelds more instead.

According to IGN and Windows Central, “Photos of Asus’ Xbox-branded handheld device leaked online earlier this month. Two images of the Asus ROG Ally 2 device — one white, one black — went public via the Indonesian certification office, which linked to a (now deleted) listing on the U.S.’s FCC website. Interestingly, Windows Central’s report adds ‘the hardware side is essentially finished,’ and is thought to be one of the first devices to use the AMD Z2 Extreme processor.”

It appears this Xbox-branded Asus handheld has taken over priority from their own Xbox handheld plans. While the technology within the new console is not entirely clear, the rumors are that the devices are already in the testing stage at Microsoft. Given the social media posts on both Asus Republic of Gamers and Official Xbox, a possible announcement could be on the horizon. It should be noted that, while the official Xbox handheld may be delayed for these other projects, the next-gen Xbox console itself appears to remain full steam ahead.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft has certainly built its fan base, though in pure sales numbers, the company has always lagged behind its two greatest gaming competitors, Nintendo and Sony. There are a number of factors in play, and it is not indicative of the quality or of Microsoft’s ability to remain in the space. That said, it will be hard for an Xbox handheld to compete with the other two, but their ability to support the hardware of already established companies with successful handheld gaming devices, such as Asus ROG, is smart business. The company has shifted focus, and it is likely the most beneficial choice for them in the short term.
