What qualifies a game as one of the best PlayStation VR2 games? For some gamers, it might mean innovative use of the peripherals advanced features, like improved eye and hand tracking. For others, it may boil down to novel gameplay experiences that harness the power of VR to create a world you can’t enjoy on a “flat” screen. It could also mean unmatched immersion in a sweeping narrative full of strong story beats and memorable characters. Take a look at some of our top picks, and a few honorable mentions!
Choosing The Best PlayStation VR2 Games
To decide between the best PlayStation VR2 games, we kept a few things in mind and tried to weigh the games based on: personal preference, critical response, and overall user reception. By looking at Metacritic and PS Store user reviews (and Steam, for multiplatform releases), we were able to get a better idea of which of our favorite VR2 games were undebated hits, and which were slept on a bit. If you have any favorite PSVR2 titles we missed, make sure to mention them in the comments.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
Do you like visceral combat, tense survival situations, and more zombies than you can shake a rusty machete at? If so, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners might very well be one of the best PlayStation VR2 games you can play right now. Though the first chapter of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners also came to the original PSVR, the PSVR2 version makes use of the newer system’s advanced hardware to deliver a more immersive, tense experience. As an added bonus, PlayStation Plus Premium members can access Chapter One as part of their subscription.
Gran Turismo 7
Despite a recent update unleashing some pretty goofy-looking bugs on unsuspecting players, Gran Turismo 7 is still one of the best PlayStation VR2 games on the market. It’s a racing experience like no other, capable of creating a real feeling of propulsive motion and speed. Critics adored the game, though users are split on some platforms, with the more favorable reception coming from the PS Store rating. However, if you want first-person realism and one of the most accurate racing sims you can get, Gran Turismo 7 is a VR experience without equal.
Tetris Effect: Connected
With an overall “Overwhelmingly Positive” score on Steam and “Generally Favorable” on Metacritic, it’s clear that Tetris Effect: Connected is one of the best PlayStation VR2 games. The Ps5 version also boasts a 93 critic rating on Metacritic, with one of the top reviews calling it “the definitive Tetris experience.” With sumptuous, colorful visuals, an earworm-filled soundtrack, and plenty of mind-blowing challenges — including multiplayer — for high-level players, there’s enough to keep you coming back to Tetris Effect: Connected for dozens of hours.
Resident Evil 4 & Village (TIE)
If you want high-quality horror in VR, you can’t go wrong with either Resident Evil 4 or Resident Evil: Village. Each game deserves its place on a list of the best PlayStation VR2 games for a reason, from bombastic action sequences, to pulse-pounding moments of terror that are only amplified by the VR perspective. Resident Evil 4 VR Mode is a free add-on if you already own the base game, as is the add-on for Resident Evil Village. The stories aren’t directly connected, so you can start in any order, though Village is a direct sequel to Resident Evil VII, and many view it as a spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4.
Red Matter 2
Red Matter 2 is a true visual showcase with some engaging gameplay, cementing it as one of the best PlayStation VR2 games, especially for its price. A follow-up to Red Matter, the story picks up right where the first left off, though it’s not a must-play if you’d rather jump right into Red Matter 2. The game received high praise from critics and users alike, who enjoyed its creative puzzling, stunning visuals, and intriguing central mystery.
Honorable Mentions
Of course, the previously mentioned titles aren’t an exhaustive list of the best PlayStation VR2 games available today. Other hits include Horizon Call of the Mountain, a true showcase for the peripheral’s tech, Pavlov, perhaps the current best VR2 multiplayer shooter, Beat Saber and Synth Riders, the rhythm game sensations that offer a surprisingly difficult workout at higher levels, and Demeo, a fun virtual reality take on some of your favorite tabletop gaming sessions. Plus, it seems like we still have quite a few games to anticipate, alongside the upcoming PSVR2-to-PC adapter that will open up an entire new world of VR gaming potential.
