Revisiting The Classic Sonic Adventure 2

Sonic Adventure 2.

Sonic Adventure 2 was an iconic game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. With its GameCube port, the game introduced its main character to a new generation of fans. Not only that but the game cemented Sega’s transition to third-party development by maintaining its fanbase. Likewise, Sonic Adventure 2 marked the beginning of a business relationship between Sega and Nintendo, and as a result, ended their years-long rivalry.

Gameplay of Sonic Adventure 2

Developed by Sonic Team USA, the 2001 platformer, Sonic Adventure 2, officially released on the Dreamcast. Moreover, the game features two intertwining storylines giving players a choice to be hero or villain. These two storylines consist of Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, and Knuckles working to save the world, while Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, and Dr. Eggman pursue world domination.

More than that, the gameplay is divided into three styles allowing players to choose their approach to the game. To experience a fast-paced platformer style, players control Sonic or Shadow, choosing Tails or Eggman provides multi-directional shooting gameplay, and lastly, players can partake in an action-adventure exploration by picking Knuckles or Rouge. Overall, Sonic Adventure 2 focuses on players collecting rings and defeating enemies, while offering multiplayer battle options and interactions with virtual pets called Chao.

Following 1998’s Sonic Adventure, Sega’s Sonic Team had downsized with some of its members moving to San Francisco. Once relocated, these individuals would form Sonic Team USA, where they’d spend almost two years developing the sequel, Sonic Adventure 2. Although the game was developed by a smaller team than its predecessor, the team was able to create a much faster action-oriented style game that gave equal focus to each character. Overall, Sonic Adventure 2 was directed by Takashi Lizuka and produced by Yuji Naka. Furthermore, American locations such as Yosemite and San Francisco inspired the game’s level designs. Lastly, its soundtrack spanned various genres including hip-hop, jazz, pop-punk, glam metal and even orchestral arrangements.

Sonic Adventure 2 Praise and Criticisms

Released in June 2001, Sega released Sonic Adventure 2 to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s tenth anniversary as a franchise. This game would also be the last Sonic game released on a Sega console, following their discontinuation of the Dreamcast and shift into third-party development. Its GameCube port was released later that same year and made Sonic Adventure 2 the first official Sonic game released on a Nintendo console.

Ultimately, Sonic Adventure 2 received mostly positive reviews as critics enjoyed its visuals, music, and variety of gameplay. Conversely, its negative reviews were for the game’s camera angles, plot, and voice acting. While the GameCube version received more negative reviews than the Dreamcast version, the game still sold around 1.7 million copies worldwide. Due to its massive amount of sales, Sonic Adventure 2 would become the top-selling third-party game for the GameCube and one of its best-selling games as well.

Final Thoughts

Not only did the game’s GameCube port expand Sonic’s reach, it also introduced various characters and elements that would be used for future games. One character that was introduced in Sonic Adventure 2 was Shadow the Hedgehog, who quickly became a fan-favorite among players. As a result of Shadow’s popularity, he’d go on to star in Sonic spin-off games such as 2005’s Shadow the Hedgehog and 2024’s Shadow Generations

Due to its popularity, Sonic Adventure 2 was given a re-release in 2012 on the various platforms including the PlayStation 3, XBox 360, and Windows. Moreover, the game received praise for its first level, City Escape, as it’s regarded as one of the best opening stages in gaming history. Despite its negative reviews surrounding its focus on numerous characters, Sonic Adventure 2 is ranked high in many best Sonic the Hedgehog game lists and inspired various adaptations such as Sonic X and even the upcoming and highly-anticipated film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3
