The Coolest Ghouls in the Fallout Franchise

Ghoul

The Fallout franchise is beloved for many things, its characters first and foremost. Their characters can be defined in many ways, from faction to location. Characters also can be a variety of non-human creatures, from mutants to robots. Among the series’ most popular denizens are the zombie-faced ghouls.

Cursed with scarring from radiation, they are long-lived and safe from further nuclear poisoning. However, their non-conventionally attractive looks should make them off-putting to most players. Fans should not be underestimated, though, as many ghouls are deeply popular characters. Here are some of Fallout’s coolest ghouls.

Raul Tejada

In New Vegas’ base experience, one of your companions is the ghoul mechanic Raul Tejada. He can be found on Black Mountain, managing the Nightkin Tabatha’s radio network. After resolving her situation, you can rescue the man from indentured servitude. Skilled with repairs and a pistol, he will happily follow you henceforth. Raul’s story, though, is a tragic one.

Having lived since the bombs were first dropped, he has lived and lost much. If you befriend him, he will tell you of his sister’s horrible murder. You can help him decide to live as a pistolero of justice or a retired old mechanic. Either way, he is one of the most chill companions Fallout has ever had.

John Hancock

Borrowing the name of the legendary signer of the Declaration of Independence, Hancock is a companion in Fallout 4. Acting as the mayor of Goodneighbor, he will welcome you and make sure you don’t get mugged upon entry. Should you aid some folks trying to steal from him, he realizes his grip on the town is too loose.

He asks to journey with you to get a refresher on who he should be. You can learn of his past, being the brother of Diamond City’s mayor. He and the other ghouls were expelled, causing him to take a leadership role to help champion his people. Hancock is also a romance option for players who really like ghouls.

Dean Domino

In New Vegas‘ DLC package Dead Money, you meet Dean Domino. Your first meeting is tumultuous as he threatens you with a bomb and tells you what to do. Dean is unique amongst Fallout characters in that the best choice is to avoid skill checks. Dean will be antagonistic if you appear to defy him.

You will be forced to fight him in the end. Rarely in this game, should you do as he says and never take a speech check against him, he will like you. This leads to his best ending. As a former lounge singer, Dean is as smooth as they come. While he is ostensibly a victim of Elijah like you, he seems like he belongs in this accursed place.

Final Thoughts on Ghouls

Ghouls all provide interesting storytelling possibilities in Fallout. Many of them have lived for a long time, possibly even before the drop of the bombs. Characters like Raul and Dean struggle with their past, their long life not helping them move on. Others like Hancock face discrimination as a ghoul and must fight to be respected.

Ghouls can play as dramatic underdogs or rogueish scoundrels. They aren’t conventionally pretty, but beneath their monstrous visages, they are as human as anyone. Each of them offers a chance to see how someone can live with being a monster in a monstrous world. More often than not, however, it is those who judge them that are the real monsters.
