The Destroyer in Borderlands is a mysterious creature that is often overlooked in the universe’s lore. With an appearance at the end of the first game and a brief cameo in the recent film adaptation, some may be wondering what this strange creature is exactly. Fear not, fellow Vault Hunters, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we will look at the character’s origins, its appearances in the series, and the true nature of the Vaults. So strap in, strap up, and prepare to meet the eldritch horror known as The Destroyer. (Note: There may be spoilers for the Borderlands movie ahead).

The Destroyer in Borderlands: Origins

The Destroyer’s origins can be traced back to the Eridians, the ancient alien species that built the Vaults. The Vaults were rumored to contain a vast amount of treasure and riches, but as the first Vault Hunters discovered, this wasn’t the case. It is revealed in the first Borderlands that the Eridians designed the Vaults to serve as prisons for dangerously powerful eldritch beings. It isn’t known what exactly happened to the mysterious Eridians’ civilization, but it is thought to have something to do with beings like The Destroyer. The creature has a grotesque appearance, covered in bloody flesh, tentacles, and teeth.

In Borderlands 3, we find out that The Destroyer survived its encounter with the Vault Hunters in the first game by retreating back to its prison. It is also revealed that the planet Pandora itself is a prison known as the Great Vault to contain it. The main antagonists of the game, the Calypso twins, conspire to control The Destroyer’s power by merging with it via their siren powers. The Destroyer cannot be restrained forever, as it waits for its prison to weaken over time so it can continue its path of destruction across the universe. The Eridians feared this creature, proven by their tremendous efforts to contain it.

Destroy The Destroyer

The Destroyer serves as the final boss at the end of the first Borderlands. After Commander Steele and her Crimson Lance mercenaries open the Vault expecting riches, they instead come face to face with The Destroyer. The Guardian Angel manipulated the Vault Hunters to seek out the Vault, knowing what was in it. She convinces the Vault Hunters to be heroes and fight the monstrous creature. It is a massive enemy that has a ton of health and deadly attacks and can possibly be the hardest fight in the game. Good preparation and strategy are both recommended in order to defeat it.

The Destroyer’s tentacles do massive damage at close range and can fire huge purple needles that can one-shot you if you’re not careful. Avoiding these tentacles, moving from cover to cover, and shooting its weak spots when you can earn your victory. Throwing grenades in its mouth at the beginning of the fight can be a great way to knock a large chunk of its health down quickly. It’s important to stay mobile in this fight as many of Destroyer’s attacks do massive damage, and staying behind the same piece of cover too long will get you killed. Also make sure you identify the weak spots fast so you can do as much damage as possible.

An Eternal Evil

As well as being the subject of multiple games in the series, Destroyer also makes a brief cameo in the Borderlands movie. At the end of the movie, Lilith traps the villain Atlas inside the Vault, where a creature suddenly drags him away. Fans were quick to recognize this monster as The Destroyer. It’s uncertain what’s going to happen to this film franchise at this point, as the movie has been panned in many reviews. If a sequel does get made, then we already have an antagonist set up. It would be interesting to see what they could do with the character, considering its great importance in the lore.

While we eagerly await the next game in the series, revisiting the original games and exploring the lore is a great way to kill time. Beings like The Destroyer, the mysteries of the Eridians, and what happened in the Borderlands universe’s ancient history deserves to be explored in greater detail. The true nature of the Vaults being prisons and people trying to open them means there should be no shortage of chaos and conflict to be used for future games or films. We may not have seen the last of this creature, as it could still be lurking out there somewhere, waiting for a clueless Vault Hunter to free it.
