The Fascinating Locations Of Fallout 3

When Interplay first licensed the Fallout franchise to Bethesda in 2004, no one could’ve guessed how the post-apocalyptic franchise would evolve. They would ultimately sell the franchise in its entirety, and Bethesda would launch the franchise in a new direction starting with 2008’s Fallout 3. Moving the franchise to the East Coast, the game would center around the Washington D.C. area and continue the franchise’s look at a world of classical Americana. Here are the best places to visit in Fallout 3.

Tenpenny Tower

So much time in Fallout 3 is spent dealing with raiders, mutants, and ne’er-do-wells. Most of your time exploring is going to involve dealing with a lack of civility. You may find yourself delighted then to stumble upon Tenpenny Tower. Tucked away from all the violence in the heart of the capital, this tower is run by people with class and elegance. Many folks simply looking for a place to live out their days in peace make their home here. Should you do a minor task or two for the owner, Mr. Tenpenny, he will set you up with a suite of your very own! Featuring a robotic butler, you will have a place to rest your feet.

Unfortunately, Mr. Tenpenny isn’t the most popular for his high standards. Not only is the village of Megaton on his hit list, but he also has a policy against ghouls. This means your time in the tower will be spent only with folks of the human sort, leaving you free from having to deal with the angry visage of those less fortunate souls. Of course, perhaps you may seek to persuade Mr. Tenpenny and the denizens of his delightful tower to take a softer approach on the poor ghoul-folk. Regardless of your choices, if you acquire your room in the tower you will always have a plush and extravagant place to return to.

Underworld

When the Vault Dweller inevitably ventures into the capital, they will find themselves surrounded by violence and destruction. Unfortunately, many of D.C.’s greatest sights are in ruins or home to constant battle. There is a notable exception, however. Within the Museum of History, many of the capital’s ghouls have set up their delightful settlement known as Underworld. Before the bombs dropped, the museum was hosting an exhibit on artwork discussing afterlives across cultures. This proved to be the perfect venue for the founders of Underworld to build their new home around.

Underworld features many pieces of real-world artwork that one could imagine might be displayed at a Museum of this caliber. The citizens here run a variety of businesses, from a clothier to a doctor’s office and even a lovely bar. One can take up work and help the locals out with their plights. They can even spend the night at Carol’s Place if they find they enjoy the sights so much they want to spend the evening. You can even visit the resident barber Snowflake to give yourself a new outlook on life! Underworld proves that even in the most unusual of places, the NPCs of Fallout 3 have made a life for themselves.

Oasis

The previous two locations both provided relics of the old world to make you wish for times before destruction. Oasis takes this one step further by bringing something most of the Wasteland is missing: natural growth. Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful trees, bushes, and other plants. Growing a bright vibrant green, this creates one of the most standout locations in all of the Capital Wasteland. The area is cared for by a group called the Treeminders, who eschew violence and focus on cultivating this natural paradise. While quite small, it provides hope that green forests could once again spread across the desolate landscape.

The Treeminders offer the opportunity for philosophical debate over what must be done to protect the Oasis and help the outside world. They guard against violence but will allow newcomers to approach if they have the right attitude. A happy traveler with a good heart will find comrades within the Oasis who will grant them the opportunity to see wonders that the rest of the Wasteland is missing. There is truly nothing like it in Fallout 3 or most Fallout games for that matter. It makes one wonder what kind of natural paradises exist elsewhere in the destroyed world. Regardless, Oasis gives the players a brief reprieve filled with beauty.

Final Thoughts

Fallout 3 has a lot of fun areas to explore when it comes to quests and story content. The Vaults can be frightening and humorous. Seeing the monuments of Washington D.C. can create a great sense of place. However, the nicest locations are arguably the ones that provide the most visual beauty. Much of the Capital Wasteland is grey, brown, and dull. Destroyed metros and ruined buildings get tiring to look at. Megaton looks like a pile of scrap, while Rivet City is grey and steel everywhere. Finding a location with some visual niceties is a breath of fresh air. As you explore in Fallout 3, keep an eye out for those areas that introduce some visual wonder.
