3 The Legend of Zelda Games with the Best Music

The Legend of Zelda music

If you play through any The Legend of Zelda games, you’ll notice a few commonalities. First, they mostly all follow a bit of a formula, with only 2017’s Breath of the Wild and 2023’s Tears of the Kingdom serving to disrupt or alter that formula. Second, and perhaps most important, is that each game is highly dependent on and makes exceptional use of music.

When players think back to any specific part of any Zelda title, they likely have a clear memory of what the music was and how good it was. There’s perhaps a case to be made about the music in all of these games, as The Legend of Zelda almost always uses the themes and scores as leitmotifs and ways to enhance the story. If choosing just a few, these are the best examples.

The Legend of Zelda Titles with the Best Music Soundtracks

Honorable Mentions: Majora’s Mask, Link’s Awakening, Skyward Sword, and the Wind Waker.

Twilight Princess

Twilight Princess has one of the best soundtracks in any game period. Few in-game tracks, let alone those from The Legend of Zelda, rival “Hidden Village”. Midna’s Lament is also fantastic, one of the most impactful songs in any game in this long-running franchise. The Hyrule Field theme from this game is top-tier, as is “Goron Mines”, “Sacred Grove”, “Gerudo Desert”, and so many others. It’s one of the most beloved games from The Legend of Zelda and the music played behind every moment is a big reason why.

Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom

The soundtrack used for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom is largely similar since they’re direct sequels and one builds on the other. They’re both great, with some songs that have already become rather iconic. The theme that plays at the stables was an immediate catch, as was one of the best songs in the Zelda franchise: Vah Ruta’s theme. That’s not to mention other great musical parts of the two games, like “Rising Island Chain” or Farosh’s theme. Really, all of the dragon themes are excellent entries into the music of this franchise. The main themes for both titles are also incredible, especially Tears of the Kingdom.

Ocarina of Time

While there’s certainly nothing subjective about a video game or the quality of music, there has been little disagreement among video game fans as to which The Legend of Zelda game has the best music. Since 1998, Ocarina of Time has functioned as the comparison for all 3D Zelda games, and that includes in soundtrack. It came first, which means all the musical references in future games are looking back at Ocarina of Time. It just has some of the most iconic tracks in the entire franchise, such as “Zelda’s Lullaby”, “Gerudo Valley”, “Great Fairy’s Fountain”, and so many others. This soundtrack has quality, recognizability, and the most sincere form of flattery: imitation.
