The Outer Worlds 2: All the Exciting Details So Far

The Outer Worlds 2

As we digest the small amount of footage of The Outer Worlds 2 we got during The Game Awards (TGA), true excitement can begin to brew for the game. Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming science fiction-based action RPG is a sequel to the original 2019 game. This is something the trailer that was shown off at TGA pointed out in a humorous way. While we didn’t get to see much, we still know quite a bit about what the 2025 title has in store.

The Setting

According to the game’s Steam description, The Outer Worlds 2 will take place in the Arcadia colony instead of Halcyon. This means no more running from Mantisaurs in Monarch’s wilderness or dealing with all the political problems on Terra 2. Instead, we’ll be able to explore whole new environments. Given that the gameplay trailer‘s narrator said that the game “will almost certainly be two times bigger” than the first game, we’ll have more variety of places to explore compared to the first game.

So far we’ve seen environments that range from cold and industrial to flourishing with flora. With just a brief glimpse at the locations found within The Outer Worlds 2, it’s impossible to know just how many planets, moons, or space stations we will be able to explore. However, what has been made clear is that the art style for these environments will be similar to what we saw in the first game. I’m glad to see that Obsidian has made the first game’s style stick.

The Story

Just like Halycon, Arcadia seems to be a troublesome place that’s prime with big decisions to make and enemies to take down while doing so. These troubles are caused by a war between factions. The so-called benevolent Protectorate is being threatened by a large rebel group taking a stand against its religious order and corporate tactics. Corporations were involved in many issues seen within the first game, and it’s nice to see that continuing in The Outer Worlds 2. While these factions fight, destructive rifts tear through the colony, which those involved in the fighting seek to either control or close.

In The Outer Worlds 2, will take on the role of their custom Earth Directorate agent. Their job will be to uncover the mystery behind these dangerous rifts before they cause humanity to reach a devastating end. While doing so, players must also get involved with the troubles, twists, and hijinks they and their crew will ultimately get involved in. Their choices may just decide the fate of factions, civilizations, and humanity itself.

The Fun

Just from the description of The Outer Worlds 2 and the footage we’ve seen, it’s clear that it’s filled with action just like its predecessor. There’s stealth, intense firearms, melee weapons that can slice enemies into pieces, and likely so much more. There will be a weapon for any play style. If it’s anything like the first game, the weapons in the sequel are bound to get incredibly powerful and chaotic. You’ll need them if you want to shape Arcadia’s fate.

You’ll also need quite the crew of companions, which is what The Outer Worlds 2 will offer. They’ll help players achieve whatever diplomatic or dastardly ambitions they may have. However, the choices made in the game will impact their fates just like all the other colonists. Players can support their companions’ character growth journeys or even bring about their early deaths. Players should expect immersive stories as they learn more about the friends they make along the way throughout the game.

Waiting For Release Day

Despite everything that has been revealed about the game, there is still no solid release date in sight. However, it’s still slated to be released at some point in 2025. It likely won’t be in the first quarter, though. That time period is most likely reserved for Obsidian’s other upcoming game, Avowed. That’s set to be released on February 18, 2025. Whenever The Outer Worlds 2 is released, players are assuredly in for a special sci-fi spectacle.
